It doesn't appear that many bookstores carry Barefoot Gen even though it's supposedly licensed here in the States. What's up with that?

Barefoot Gen has swapped publishers a great number of times in the twenty plus yeas it's been available in the US. The most recent publisher, Last Gasp, is still publishing BG. Unfortunatally you probobly won't find it in any bookstores anytime soon. This could be because the publisher cannot distribute is widely, or more than likely most manga fans simply won't be interested in buying it. Either way, its a real shame, as BG is a classic that everyone should read. You can probobly get a bookstore to do a special order for you, or can try an online store such as amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0867196025/qid=1116800205/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/102-5208257-9923322?v=glance&s=books&n=507846).

Certainly an odd choice for a company name. They're actually an online bookstore that seems to specialize in odd books not usually found in bookstores (which ends up being mostly smut and art books). They do publish some matterial though; mostly books and indie comics, and of course Barefoot Gen. Since they seem to be more of a specialty store that people seek out, I doubt many bookstores would consider titles from them to be big sellers, let alone a manga that has virtually nothing in common with what's popular at the moment.
Well, the author lived through Hiroshima, and he holds nothing back when it comes to the depictions of the effects of the bomb and radiation. Definitally one of the most graphic mangas I've ever seen. Little actual violence is seen, but the effects of radiation are all here. Pretty hard to believe that it once ran in the same magazine as Naruto and I"s, especially since there are some rather deep themes in addition to the graphic nature of the illustrations. But I suppose the subject matter and powerful anti-war message was enough to allow it to remain in a children's anthology (after all, many Christians took their children to see the Passion). It's especially effective as an anti-war manga because it never points fingers only at the US (there is a strong criticism of Japan's path in the war) and it never becomes preachy like so many anti-war stories do; it just shows how stupid and painful war can be for people. |

Not exactly. Well, maybe, considering your location. I live in Los Angeles and I have seen it in the local Kinokuniya bookstore in Little Tokyo. They happen to carry a lot of titles other bookstores don't have (I found the rare ParaKiss purple covers there--I lost the chance to buy #4 though) and they do have Barefoot Gen. Several volumes of it, in fact. They have several locations, but I don't know if those have it. I think they have a website too...so, online only.

Hm... in light of this, I may go back to my local comic store and pick up the Barefoot Gen volumes I saw there. I definitely want to read it.
