I have subscriptions to Newtype USA, Anime Insider, and Protoculture Addicts. While I love to read all three of them - as they all have a slew of information - I strongly suggest you give Protoculture Addicts a try. They've been around longer than NTUSA and Anime Insider, most of the staffers at ANN contribute to the magazine (they became partners with them last year), the articles are very informative and straight-to-the-point, and it's cheap ($4.95 US). The only negatives I see in PA are that it's a bimonthly magazine and most of the pages are in black & white. Other than those minor issues, it's a great magazine.

If you don't feel like going out to your bookstore to buy a magazine and instead read one on-line, definitely look at Anime Fringe ( www.animefringe.com ). I started reading Fringe this year and it's a well-structure and easy-to-read magazine.

It's too bad the anime magazine subsribtion discounts are so small (especially if compared to basically any other magazine sold in the U.S.). Although, I'll try and find Proculture Addicts, if it's $5.

Where would you find copies of P.A.? I haven't seen any in any of the bookstores I've perused before (mainly Barnes and Nobles)

And is it just me or have the DVD inserts In Newtype USA just gotten crappier and crappier? Razz

Yeah, and I never cared for the columns either. Sad

I like Anime Insider though, they recently made it monthly and a bit larger.

You can obtain back issues of P.A. thru their website. I should have mentioned that another negative was that it's not readily available at the major bookstores like Borders and B&N. My apoligies.

Although I'm a fan of NTUSA, I have to agree that I've been uninterested in most of the recent inserts (DVDs and centerfolds). We have a lot of new releases, yet most of them don't show up on the DVDs. I like it when they offer two anime per DVD insert (at least one that's not really popular but turns out to be pretty good). Also, what happened to the posters?!

I agree, two episodes a DVD is right on (though I'd love to see 3 per DVD+ about 15 previews, but I'm not going to push my luck there Razz )

And yeah I do wish they'd add more cool stuff like posters. That would be a good addition to the mag especially to entice more people who like posters to buy it (I love posters myself)

And about the centerfolds-it would be really cool (but rather unlikely) for them to get the artist for the series they are centerfolding to do an original sketch specifically for NTUSA. And, on the whole, I would like to see more original content. Sure, the translated text of the Japanese articles is cool, but I do want to hear from the editors/writers of NTUSA as well-as long as they're not biased!

You can also order a P.A. subscription thru TRSI (The Right Stuf International). That's how I bought mine. Cool

I renewed my Newtype subscription last week and the price was $89.95 US.

EDIT: The link wasn't working, so I removed it.

Off the website, it's $80.95 USA (regular price $89.95). Canada is $130.50 (reg. $145), and foreign is $148.50 (reg. $165).

EDIT: I guess the Newtype sub cost keeps dropping Razz

PS: That RightStuf link to PCA did not work for me, trying this one http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/MROphMZHllNpQBya-8/browse/search/5/4/0/0/results/desc/asc/50/1

If you're willing to take a bit of a jump and look at anime from a more academic/intellectual standpoint, the academic journal Mechademia will be a great choice. (It won't be released until Fall 2006... possibly-and hopefully-in Spring 2006, but it will be well worth the wait. It will come out annually after that.) Some of the biggest names in anime academic circles--Marc Hairston, Brian Run, Susan Napier, etc--will have essays in it. Plus illustrations from yours truly...

My favorite current anime mag is Anime Insider, but I really like Protoculture Addicts as well. And I've become immersed in my new Shojo Beat manga anthology. I know the last one isn't a magazine per say, but I do like the articles in between the manga chapters.
