There is no shortage of good-lookoing women in Japanese animation. They come in various forms: athletes, fighters, scholars, temptresses Twisted Evil, etc.

I would like to start a discussion about which female characters from Japanese animation everyone here feels are noteworthy.

Please keep in mind that, while I am a male, I am not attempting to be sexist or chauvinistic in any way. I am merely attempting to have a friendly discussion about women in Japanese animation.

I strongly believe that a women must possess more than good looks to be noteworthy. Other factors may include, but are not limited to, personality, physical capabilities, and mental capabilities.

The women whom I most admire and respect in anime are Momo Adachi from Peach Girl, Yoruichi Shihoin from Bleach, and Mizuho Kazami from Onegai Teacher! Yoruichi Shihoin is a powerful fighter, but also has a good sense of humor, and has self-confidence that does not quite equate to arrogance. Momo Adachi, while not a fighter, is an athlete, and is incredibly strong willed. Throughout the twenty-five episodes of Peach Girl, she undergoes many difficulties and ordeals and is able to overcome them. Mizuho Kazami is a schoolteacher who spoiler[ends up being married to one of her own students.] Because of this secret, she gets into some very embarassing situations, but is able to cleverly explain her way out. She may seem to be ditzy, but is actually keenly intelligent and is very friendly to everyone she meets.

Any other takes? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

I don't know if its is because I am a huge fan of the series or not but I admire Major Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell SAC. Its not because her outfit is little more than nothing but because she rather thinks her way through a situation,i.e. brains over braun, but when she needs to fight she had the skill to do so.

I am a fan of the lovely magical girl genre, and from there Himeno from Pretear stands out, because she's not your average shoujo heroine, she's tough in her own right and doesn't need superpowers in order to fight her battles (though they help Anime hyper).

I would have to go with Lisa Hayes from robotech. Guess because the way she handles her self as a successful military career woman and her positive additude. I love at times when she knows to give sympathy to those under her command but then also has the ability to enforce her orders(except for Rick Hunter at times but that's for obvious reasons.)

She isn't ditzy. The klutzy feel only emerged in Onegai Twins, that was when she was very ditzy and naive.

I'll just second this, by saying; Mizuho is my #1 favorite. Smart, mature and beautiful. Mizuho was one of the few characters which promoted the element of glasses in anime. I remember there was a convention about "women with glasses" and Onegai Teacher was the highlight of the event.

I dislike it when there are doujinshi (actually there is) around which ruin the character.
Onegai Teacher brought great drama and superb characters, making the anime very realistic, and moving.

*sob*.. sigh.

Another one of my favorites would be Belldandy, but I'm beginning to verge away from her (don't know why), maybe because the TV series made her very naive and clueless sometimes.

I tend to like the mature female characters, e.g. Tendou Kasumi from Ranma 1/2; Emma from Victorian Romance Emma; Hibiya Chitose from Chobits; CD Kei from Hand Maid May; Sakuraba Aoi from Ai Yori Aoshi, etc.

My favorite female character would have to be Haruko from FLCL. She, by far in my eyes, has to be the coolest femme to exist in the anime world. She's crazy, she has an awesome guitar, and she can do almost anything she wants, spoiler[that and she's kinda evil *insert evil laugh*] Usually, many female roles seem to make me a little like, "Sigh, look, another ditzy girl." but Haruko sure changed that around. Very Happy

I highly respect Chidori from Full Metal Panic, not only is she good looking but she posseses great athletic ability and is able to stand up for herself and isn't afraid to speak what she thinks (as Sagara knows well). She also gets put through alot in her "adventures" and she still has the same personality as she does in the beginning of the series which makes her not only physicaly strong, but mentaly strong as well.

My favorite female anime character is Rukia Kuchiki of Bleach. I can find nothing wrong with her character. From her character design to her personality, Rukia is just completely awesome. She's all-around easy to get into and has an interesting sense of humor. (The entire Bleach series does.)

If I might be excused for paraphrasing ADV's copy, my notable female is a traveler on a motorcycle who searches for life’s answers, life’s questions, and the myriad of interpretations connected to them. She's a wielder of knives, guns and a piercing tongue, and ready to embark on a journey unlike any other. She's spoiler[Kino], of course.

Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop. Seemingly annoying, but she annoys with class. I think she could quite possibly be anime's benchmark for natural, innate sexiness. She has it all - the eyes, the figure, the voice, the catwalk, and an eccentrically feisty personality to boot. Her bizarre relationship with money (wink wink), and her tendency to "run-off" with money, can be seen as a sort of 'mischievous' charm. Which is, of course, contrasted by a different kind of charm that surfaces when she holds a gun or fly on her ship like mad. She's cool, pretty darn gorgeous, and tantalisingly sexy.

Being a girl, there isn't a specific "woman of anime" that has grabbed my attention... "guys of anime" however... hee hee hee Twisted Evil ...don't get me started!

Anyways, I have noticed that a lot of you guys have listed some pretty specific characteristics in these "women of anime" that cause you to swear your undying loyalty to them. Just out of curiosity, do you guys see these characteristics as something you would like your girlfriend to posess?

For me and the woman(Lisa Hayes) I chosed, not necessarily. While, I like some of her characteristics with being able to handle herself ,specially in the military, I probably want more of a girl who could handle herself but still has some other qualitys that Lisa didn't have(understanding for one, Lisa had understanding at times but at some points she just didn't get anything about relationship. Specially when dealing with the Rick Hunter Character). But that's probably the only characteristic she has that I would want in a girl friend which is them being able to handle themself. But I would want more then just that characteristic.

This, however, doesn't change the fact that I admire her for what was happening during the anime. But like I said her characteristics really aren't there in what I want with a girlfriend(basically, just one characteristic she has.)

My favorite group of women are definately the ensemble (including Yukari and Nyamo) on Azumanga Daioh. They really remind me of my friends and people I know, some of whom are guys. The characters are not in the story to be an object of affection as in so many shonen series. They are also not torn between choosiing which guy to go out with like in so many shojo series. They simply are who they are and feel realistic to me. Hollywood and most anime series feel like they are forced to write in a relationship or crush into the plot, which often annoys me. Azumanga shows the importance of friendship.

I agree... she's one of the few... dare I say flawless characters in anime. She goes through a lot of crap and her personality doesnt change... She is very true to herself as well.

My goodness me...you just stole my choices.

Rukia is a perfect mix for me. She's confident, (arguably) strong in battle, and sassy (which creates some very funny moments), has good chemistry with the main character, and can be quite caring. I connected with her early on in the series. I also love her voice. That tomboyish hum gets me every time.

Major Makoto Kusanagi just kicks ass. Seriously. She's totally strong, can fight like HELL, is intelligent, and has a good understanding of not only the rest of her team, but of the way the world works. She commands respect, but rarely needs to as the rest of Section 9 looks up to her so much (at least, that's what I gathered). She's just all around cool. Again, both her Japanese and English voice played a role in my choice.

Also, if my icon is any indication, Yukino Miyazawa. Smart, hard-working (but also naturally intelligent and introspective), ambitious, and also just really cute. She is one of the strongest female anime characters in my mind. Early on in the series, all the best comedy came from her. After meeting Arima, she drops any dislikable traits, and becomes a nuturing, caring, and also quite carefree person (however she does not lose any of her tough quirkiness either).
