Of all the names they could have chosen, CN chose Adult Swim. I bet a good number of you already have had the dilemma of saying you were watching Adult Swim and have a teacher or parent give you a reproachful look, thinking you were watching something "inappropriate". lol, or maybe some friends or a dad asked you eagerly how steamy it got because of the same misconception . Either way, I've always had to explain or show them that I was watching anime.
Does anyone know why CN called their 12 am-2 am block Adult Swim in the first place?
Any outrageous stories about people thinking of Adult Swim as something else?

Im sure you've made the connection, but just in case:
Adult Swim is the point in time where all the kids in a swimming pool get out for an hour or two and let all the adults swim by theselves, no kids allowed, scince they get the rest of the day. Basically the programming block is the same thing. Everything exceptfor AS is aimed towards kids, while AS is SPECIFICALLY for adults.
My mom thought I was watching Skinemax or somthing until (badumbadumbadumbadumBA-DUM)
Bebop flashed accross the screen.

Ooooohhh. To tell the truth, I've never seen that kind of arrangement before at a swimming pool. It might also be that my town doesn't have a swimming pool but a nice tiny lake instead used for the same purposes . The lake's about 3-5 times as big as a swimming pool so I guess my town's pretty lucky to not have to make that arrangement .

At all the swimming pools I've ever been to, the Adult Swim isn't more than 10 minutes. But man, when I was little, those were the longest 10 minutes... but why are we talking about adults swimming on an anime forum? Seriously though, if you tell someone that you have to stay up and watch Adult Swim, don't assume that they already know what it is. I mean, a lot of people have watched it before, but there's those two or three pervs that mess it up for everyone.

...That doesn't even begin to make sense. How in the world is the name "Adult Swim" even remotely sexual?

*CN producer thinking* What would be a good name for few hours of adult/teen entertainment....Hmmmm....O yeah Adult Swim sounds good and catchy.
Names are just names, their made to attract attention and give something an identity. By asking this question, you just made this thing more popular because some people don't know what AS is yet and they get curious and try to watch it and so on and so on. It's like any other "The Zone" or "Teletoon Unleashed".

Cause in the US "adult" entertainment is a euphemism for pornography. They catch more attention by making it sound a bit racier than it really is.

as said by miu, dont you find that words such as 'adult' and 'XXX' (X-box, rumours that this is the reason why they called it X-box), 'hot' 'teen' etc... they all have connotations of the adult entertainment industry.

Oh yeah, they were really pushing for a "pornographic" insinuation when the original presentation of Adult Swim was old people in a pool...
And for the last time, stop reviving old threads!

Then wouldn't those horny people that randomly scan the T.V. guide for anything sounding remotely sexual be disappointed when they found out the truth?
