Hey, I'm kinda wondering; whats the general time frame that it takes a company to release a show after liscensing it?
I know that a lot of work has to go into it, translation, new voice actors, possible edits, the actual production, etc, but how fast do most companies get that done? thanks |

I did a random sample of 10 titles either currently or very recently in release and the average turn-around time between the American license being announced and the first DVD being released in the States was around 8 months.
Of course, it should be remembered that some companies license a title but then sit on the announcement until they can reveal it at a major 'con, so the average could actually be a bit higher than that. |

Does the series get licensed first and then dubbed? Wouldn't a series with a lot more dialogue take longer to dub, and therefore take longer to be released as well? What about the episode count?

Of course. You can't start dubbing if you don't even own the rights to distribute/broadcast the thing.
It depends on how nitpicky they get about quality and whether or not there's a time frame for broadcasting. If a series is going to be aired on TV, then chances are they won't be able to take as much time, as opposed to the bigger time cushion for titles that go straight to video. |

I literally just picked the first 10 recent series that came to mind (11, actually, since I couldn't find a dated licensing announcement for one) that were straight-to-video in the U.S., since those broadcast first on TV would be quite a bit skewed from the average. None of them were especially more or less dialogue-intensive than the others; we're talking about titles like Elfen Lied, Ah! My Goddess, Madlax, and Scrapped Princess here. The least of the lot was just under 6 months, the longest a bit over 11. And just going on recall of when other titles were announced compared to when they actually appeared in the States, 8 months sounds about right for an average. |
