I'm from Vancouve WA and just across the river is Portland. Every year they have the Kumoricon in Portland around September (Kumori means "rain"). But noone ever seems to give it much publicity or notice. We might be small but we're loyal. Why do we get screwed and places like Seattle get more publicity?

If you want to get attention, you really have to go an publicize yourself. Put up flyers, post on communities, just get the word out there.
My anime club runs a convention in February called Animaritime, and we have an advertising committee to help get the word out, and now we've grown from a convention with 50 attendees to one with 250 (and we expect to double that next year, since cons tend to double in attendence for the first couple of years). |

You're getting 'screwed'? How?
Conventions become popular because people put blood, sweat and tears into attracting popular guests and creating publicity by promoting the event effectively. |

Doesn't Kumori mean "cloud"? Anyway, yeah, you've got to promote the hell out of your own convention...one smart thing is to make sure to schedule things on a weekend that doesn't conflict with other cons in the same region, as that might diminish the clout and popularity. I'm on staff for Anime NebrasKon, and we have an advertising committee that will promote things the best that we can, and all of us do our best to go to other cons and advertise ourselves, much like I'm doing here in this post
