I have seen and heard numerous references in Japanese animation to foxes with nine tails, and I am wondering how this is significant to the Japanese culture. I know that there is a Japanese myth/legend about a nine-tailed fox, but I do not know any details. Could someone please give me more information on this topic?

Yeah. There are quite alot of references to nine-tail foxes. I remember in Pokémon there was one, and in Naruto there's the nine-tails. I've also heard about it in other places. However, I didn't know it was based off of a myth. I guess I gotta read about on my day off. |

True. Foxes are very important in Japanese Culture. I only skim read the article but I will mention the myth about Tamamo:
She was a demon 9-tale fox. The myth probably came through China. She, as many foxes, had the ability to take the shape of a human. Through India to Japan she reck havoc, but hid as a court lady until she was discovered and turned herself into a killer rock. Later on she was exorcised by a monk named Genno and smashed by his holy hammer |

"Smashed by his holy hammer," eh? I wonder if they mean that literally or figuratively? |

This isn't anime but Mercedes Lackey had a 3-tailed fox character in her Crome Born series (X-Ray Foxtrot, his name, later became a 4-tailed fox) and in one scene, X-Ray said that he didn't want to become involved with or challenge this other Kitsune because she was a 9-tail and he didn't want to be called "Stumpy" for the rest of his short life.
So obviously the more tails, the more powerful. I don't think I'd like to get on the wrong side of a 9-tail! Isn't the demon Naruto carries inside him a fox demon with 9-tails? |

Kitsune is a fox, but isn't a nine-tailed fox specifically referred to as a Kyuubi (nine-tails)? This is the word that Naruto uses for the nine-tailed fox demon and one of the Digimon from Tamers (Kyuubimon). Wiki only makes brief mention of "kyūbi no kitsune", does anyone have any other info?

Don't quote me on this, but I do reacll some stuff on the kyuubi. If I rememeber correctly, a kitsune lives around 900 years. Every 100 years, it grows another tail as its power and skill increases until it reaches nine tails. Here's a good link about it, which goes into other types of kitsune: http://www.comnet.ca/%7Efoxtrot/kitsune/kitsune8.htm |

Kyuubi literally means "nine tails", and only the fox has nine tails. The tanuki Shuukaku has only one tail, the mythic cat is typically depicted as having two (such as Kirala in Inu Yasha), etc. There is apparently a legend that Naruto is very loosely based on that deals heavilly with the nine "x tailed" animal/dieties, of which the kyuubi is the alpha, and that also involves the sannin analogs of the slug/toad/snake triumvarate.

An awesome action rpg-esque game on ps2, Blood Will Tell, has 3 demon foxes in it. The three tails, the six tails, and you guessed it, the nine tails. The game is Japanese in origin.
Nexus, a mmo originally made in Korea, also has a nine-tails in it. A weak little thing that can only terrorize the newest and weakest players. Who could forget our friend Tails from Sonic? Hah. You can find numerous tailed foxes in an abundant of places. They all seem to pretty much come from south east Asia. |
