alright I have finally finished the first series(damn she's one of the most annoying characters ever) and it was a big dissapointment...their relationship essentially stayed as the status quo throughout(spoiler[ok yes the father consented but, unless I missed somehting they didn't go any further])
now, in this extra series 'Enishi' do they actually 1. tell any of the rest of the people they are either engaged or at least together? or 2. actually get married? you needn't go into details but I will only watch it if their relationship actually reaches 'the next level' so please answer! |

To reply to your questions simply its a yes however from what i've heard though it does go up to the next level its mostly fanservice galore for the majority until like the end so I wouldn't bother with it.

In Japan, the manga just wrapped up its run in Young King Ours which had started in 1995.
No, I don't think that Enishi is the penultimate end of the Ai Yori Aoshi series. :roll: However, it does begin - so I've heard - with one of the absolute finest chapters in the whole manga, which takes place before Aoi and Kaoru were reunited. In this chapter, Kaoru, by chance, encounters Santa Claus (who appears to him as a girl very much resembling Aoi) and he spends Christmas with her, recalling past happiness with both Aoi and his mother. It's a very touching and well-written piece in the manga, and should be every bit as much in the anime. |

I wouldn't call Aoi a doormat. She has chosen a goal in life (to marry the man she loves), and she defies her family to do so.

not that part. what I find truly annoying about her character is her strange belief that everything is her fault...how many times does she apologise for thing completely beyond her control. why she's like that isnt what annoys me...just the fact she blames herself for everything is what annoys me. but me being the sap for romance stories I am I wanted their relationship to actually go beyond what is essentially serious dating, hence the question. |

You're simply not understanding the difference in culture. Aoi is a very traditional Japanese woman and although it's exaggerate because it's anime and not real life, it's not strange for me (a Korean) to see a woman behave that way. But still, I'm not disagreeing just because you don't like her. |

Ai Yori Aoshi: Enishi doesn't come close to animating the remainder of the manga, so if you found the first series to be disappointing or inconclusive, then you probably won't find much to like in Enishi. I like the two series, but they do have their flaws.

I thought the first series was great I've so far only seen disc 1 of Enishi and it seems riddled with filler so far but the animation is impressive. The other two discs should actually arrive in a few days so I'll be able to complete it then. I don't mind Aoi one bit, sure she needs to assert herself a little more, but she's cute and self-confidence is learned behavior. Besides she showed a lot of guts comming to an unfamilliar city to find a guy she loves but doesn't know what he looks like now, defying her family. The manga, which currently there are 11 volumes brought over here, is a lot better with the execution of the main storyline and character development.
Any other fans of manga catch the in-joke in episode 2 or 3 of Enishi spoiler[Volume 11 of the manga has an ammusing advertisement for the game where Kouru makes Aoi wear nothing but an apron and some bunny ears. In that episode Kouru is fantasizing about her wearing nothing but the apron. I doubt it's coincidence. ]

Most of Enishi is filler, but most of the episodes are adapted straight out of the manga (albeit in mixed-up order) so this is more the fault of the source material than the anime itself.
Yes, not a whole lot actually happens in the second season except for a significant development concerning Tina in the last few episodes and implications that Aoi and Kaoru take their relationship to the next level. It does carry the series up through the first half of volume 10 of the manga and bits of volume 11, though. (Volume 11 being the most recent one released in the States and volume 16 being the last in Japan.) It does not have any more fan service than the original series did and has far less than the manga. The artistry in Enishi is even better than the original series, though, making it one of the prettier-looking anime series out there. And the episode about the "Aoi Santa" which a previous poster referred to is actually a bonus episode in one of the volumes (the last one, I think - I've got them lent out to a friend right now so I can't double-check). It is arguably one of the best episodes in the whole series. |

I have seen both and for the most part Enishi is just the same story line as the first one with an additional Tina story. But nothing actully changes from the first to the second. spoiler[In the first it was very important for Aoi and Kouru to keep their relationship a secret. Enishi is no different. I am sure that if they kept the story going they would tell everyone but Enishi takes place... what a few months after the first series left off.]
Even though its more of the same story it is still really funny and well worth a look. Also I noticed that the animation quality was really well done in this too. Its nice to see sometimes. |

Ok, got these two series under my belt now.
How realistic is it to find a woman such as Aoi, in Japan? The US? Please forgive my ignorance here, how is Aoi's skills, aside from sexual acts, different from those of a Geisha? She has devoted herself to being the best wife a man could have. She can do all the domestic stuff, cook and clean. She can play tennis. She can keep up with the conversation. She has a very well rounded education. I don't think Kaoru likes Aoi-chan to be so apologetic either. But what you call annoying, I call a woman I would work my butt off for. Just like everyone in the series pitched in, because they realized how much work she put in, day after day, I feel compelled at home to do better, to be worthy of a woman like that. So far, I have realized I can't do everything, everyday. Not and work 8 hours a day too. I didn't think the relationship developed much after the first series. And I think most of it occured in the first disc/volume. Enishi only brought us forward temporally, not emotionally. Either they make another series, or I have to collect all the manga to find out if Kaoru makes something of his future, so that the Sakuraba clan will accept their marriage. |
