What are some good japanese novels that are available in the USA? The only japanese novels I've read are Battle Royale and Narcissu (the latter of which I had to read online anyway).

I think there is also Fullmetal Alchemist & Scrapped Princess. I'm know there are others but which ones...Sorry, no clue. |

Maybe you want to check out the Vampire Hunter D novels. I haven't read them myself, but if they are anything like the movies, then it would be a nice distraction at the very least.

Viz released "Socrates in Love" and "Kamikaze Girls" under the Shojo Beat fiction label. (both, in my opinion were good reads)

The first volume of Scrapped Princess is coming out in July, and Tokyopop has a couple other novels coming out soon as well. They also released a bunch of Slayers and some CLAMP novel (School Detectives or something) and are currently releasing the Love Hina novels.
Seven Seas publishing (I think) is releasing the Boogiepop Phantom novels as well. I'm really hoping someone picks up the Haruhi Suzumiya and Full Metal Panic! novels. |

I imagine that you are referring to real novels. Not teen-novels like most of the anime related novels listed above.
The Vampire D novels are actually decent as they are true action/horror books by a famed Author. I've read the 1st 3 myself. They only drawback is that they are all independent novels. There are other like minded horror authors that have been translated, such as the original 'Ring' novels, and (by the same author- forget his name atm-) Spiral, Dark Water. ... better yet.. go find the website for Vertical publishing. Edit: Ka-ching, and there you have it! http://www.vertical-inc.com/ Edit Edit: o.O There is also some excellent contemporary lit by Haruki Murakami and Ryu Murakami (no relation, as far as I know). I don't remember who the US publisher is....seems like maybe Vintage. Haruki Murakami is 1 of my most favourite authors. Excellent translations as well. |
