Why is it that when anime characters wear lipstick, it never fully covers their lips? It usually only covers about half of the lower lip, and none on the top. Take this guy for example. All he has is a think red mark outlining his mouth. Why doesn't it cover all of his lips? Is this just a normal style convention of anime that goes along with big eyes and elongated limbs that I just never picked up on before?

I think its cause it looks so strange with lipstick on both lips. Looks kinda like they've got windburn or something.

There are some anime characters who have lipstick on the lower lip and the upper lipstick just like Jessie from Pokemon. BTW, I think that's a girl.

Nope, it's definitely a guy. He's Tooru Kouno from Princess Princess (a cross-dressing series).

Maybe it's to show that HE doesn't know enough about applying make-up??? Just watching RahXephon, the women have their lipstick on correctly. Even in the shower.

Yeah, I'm going to go with it being simply a stylistic thing. Big eyes, hair with more mass than their torso, it's all something that would look absolutely freaky on a normal person, but in anime you never bat an eye. I'd assume the reverse is true too, something that may look good on a normal person just may not look quite right in anime. Having a full coat of lipstick on both lips probably makes the characters look like they have huge mouths and thus less atractive. Anime characters do typically seem to have really small lips anyway.

Except her mouth is not on properly, so she doesn't count.

OK. How about that villian from One Piece, Alvida.

Even she had make-up on properly.

Could it maybe just be that the top lip is lighter due to how the light hits the lips? On the first picture that Wolverine Princess gave us the mouth is open right? I blew up the picture of the lips (I don't know how to get the picture on here because the computer won't let me paste it) and the lips looked like all the same color except for the corner of the mouth where I am guessing it is darker due to the light.

I personally have never really noticed that lipstick hasn't cover all of character's lips except Queen Amidala in Star Wars.

Well I am going to go out on a limb here so feel free to correct me, as I am most likely wrong. I always thought that it was because the Japanese in general have thin lips. Since lipstick is supposed to draw attention to the lips, it makes sense, since there lips are thin anyway.

Thats not to say I haven't seen any anime with gals drawn with full luscious lips.

Oh, that? That's a techincal issue. You see, because so many people download fansubs, studios don't make enough money to be able to properly draw lipstick.

Cause you know, downloading a fansub directly affects the Japanese animation studios. I wouldn't say it doesn't at all, but I'm going to go with even people that hate fansubs won't say it affects Japan even near as much it does any US company.

It's hard to find good pictures from Princess Princess since it's a relatively unpopular series, but all of the characters that wear lipstick have fully, pouty lips and only thin red lines around their mouth for lipstick.

What if the problem is that it is men who are drawing, and painting the cels? How many guys do you know wear lipstick?

Also, don't you put lipstick on the lower lip, and then smack them together to apply to the upper lip? So, could this have any effect?

And why would you want big red lips, if the people you are familiar with do not have them? Do japanese women wear their lipstick like american women, where big full lips are important?
