Just watched episode 5 of xxxHolic and I have to say it was one of the most captivating episodes of anime I have seen for a long time. spoiler[The oden foxes, the full moon starlings, playing shiritori to keep the spirits away.] It was a really great episode Very Happy

On a side note: How do you say xxxHolic? Is it (Triple x)holic or x x x holic?

The x's are silent so only the "holic" part is pronounced.

It's simply -holic. The xxx is a variable word that you put in front of it, such as alco-holic, anime-holic, or whatever. If XXX is your thing, though... Twisted Evil.

By the way, I've not seen the series or read any of tha manga yet, but I'm curious to see it because of the cool looking artwork. However, isn't there a bunch of preceding stuff like a movie and some characters from Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicle or whatever?

I think that's cool that you can have recurring characters and such, but it also means you have to go out of your way just to see them in previous incarnations first, right?

Well, I've just started it and its my first CLAMP and so far not really suffering for lack of seeing other stuff that may tie in. I am only 5 episodes in so far though, and who knows - perhaps I would be enjoying it a whole lot more if I had already seen Tsubasa Chronicles et al.

Anyway, I'm leaving it as 5 episodes for the night, as I think I am getting eye strain. If only wasting my time in forums wasn't so addictive, I could really do with resting these eyes of mine.

So I guess I need to decide if I am an alco-holic or a xxx-harcore-movie-holic... Very Happy

I'm still not convinced, when talking about it with other people, just saying 'holic' doesn't seem right either. But if I start talking to them about this anime I am watching called 'alcoholic' they will be equally confused. Wink

The storylines of Tsubasa Chronicles and xxxHOLiC occur in the same time period and interact with each other. In Tsubasa Chronicles and to a lesser extent xxxHOLiC there are recurring characters from other CLAMP titles that have similar personalities and traits to their original counterparts. So unless you want to understand the minor inside jokes and details, it is not required that you have experience with prior CLAMP titles. With Del Rey's release of both manga, though, the inside jokes and details are pointed out with the help of the translation notes so it's not a problem.

As for the movies, both the Tsuaba Chronicles movie and xxxHOLiC movie are standalone and do not impact the overall plot of either storyline.

I've been following the manga of both Tsubasa Chronicles and xxxHOLiC since they debuted here in the US but with my recent financial constraints, I haven't picked up the latest volumes. As for the anime, I gave up on Tsubasa after forcing myself to go to episode ten and I put xxxHOLiC on hold since I have been experiencing problems getting the latests episodes thanks to FUNimations C&D.

The CLAMP canon of work has intrigued me for a while it's just a bit intimidating to start it all. Also, there seems to be an opinion that the CLAMP manga are often far superior to the anime, which has also been a consideration. Then I got bored and just randomly started xxxHolic Very Happy.

I think I will check out the manga for some of the other ones though, out of interest and for comparative purposes.

Edit: Really off to bed now, eyes are really hurting and its time to stop trawling forums.

No, not really. No knowledge of the plot or characters of Tsubasa is required for full enjoyment and understanding of the xxxHOLiC anime. Any crossovers are extremely brief and unimportant, and have no bearing on the plot of xxxHOLiC at all (to be honest, I can't actually recall any moments of crossover, except for a very brief one in the movie). As for the movie, it is to be watched after the series (but you'd probably be safe watching it in the middle as well), not before.

Mind you, this is for the anime only. I can't comment on the frequency or importance of crossover in the xxxHOLiC manga, since I never got past the first few chapters.

Watch the preview at the end of each episode, Yuuko pronounces it as "Holic".

For the anime I'd say you really don't need any other prior knowledge, they pretty much cut out the crossovers. Gouhou Drug's still remain (Kazahaya and Rikuou at the drug store and the daffodil jar), but pretty much all of the Tsubasa references are cut (Fai's staff as a rug-beater is still intact though).

The manga on the other hand is really starting to tie in with Tsubasa and visa-versa, especially around volume 10. I'd say it's becoming more and more necessary to read both. Thankfully Tsubasa's plot is into full swing right now, although they may have to raise the age ranking with all the blood and gore when Del Rey publishes the later volumes (namely, volume 14 onwards). o_O

I do recommend the anime though, it's probably one of the best adaptions of a Clamp manga I've seen. It only covers up to around volume 7 though.

With absolutely zero knowledge of Tsubasa Chronicles nor previous knowledge of xxxHolic, I watched all 24 episodes of xxxHolic anime and greatly enjoyed every bit of it. Personally, I didn't like the art very much, but that really doesn't have anything to do with the main focus of the series anyway. For anyone who hasn't, I recommend this series, it's really good Razz

Well now I have something to look forward to. It's too bad that xxxHOLiC's release is taking such a long time. With Volume 7 released on May 2006 and Volume 8 being released in December, it's annoying how we have to wait such a long time. Though it's not Del Rey's fault at all since the manga in Japan is apparently slow as well.

From following both series weekly, I think the slowness of the Japanese releases has to do with Clamp trying to keep a certain parallel level between the two series. When a chapter of xxxHolic has a spoiler for something that isn't shown for two weeks later in Tsubasa it says something. xxxHolic's been on a month long break, so that gives you an idea of why it's taking so long. Whereas Tsubasa is churning out a volume every 2 months, they just started 18 this week and xxxHolic is just starting volume 11 this coming up week.

xxxHolic is feeling like it's nearing it's end though, so it probably won't be much longer.

I think xxxHolic runs in a gekkan magazine, I know Tsubasa runs in Shonen Magazine. It's interesting to read xxxholic and then Tsubasa. Tsubasa takes characters not only from xxxHolic and intertwines with it, but also takes characters from other Clamp titles and (though not necessarily those specific characters) and integrates them into Tsubasa's storyline as well.

Aaah! That explains some things to me!

Because Yuko "cures" (I started mis-typing and wrote curse at first but that does fit too!) people of their problems like the woman addicted to the Internet and asked Yuko spoiler[to stop her from using her PC...(when asking favors from Yuko, remember to get the wording right!)]

Well, I'm eagerly awaiting the anime and can't wait until it released here in the US.

Has anyone heard ANYTHING?? about Funi getting off their butt and setting a release date for xxxholic & Tsubasa?

Considering the xxxHolic TV series hasn't even been officially announced, at least not last time I checked, I doubt we'll be seeing that one for awhile.
