This is mainly for folks who like to read up on a series or ask for recommendations before watching something, but I suppose it can work for everyone. Also, I didn't see a topic along these lines after a search, so...

Generally, after I see a trailer for an anime that piques my interest, I do a fair deal of looking and asking around about it. I look at reviews, forum discussions on said series, ANN Encyclopedia entries, ask friends about what they've heard, etc. Essentially I want to know what I'm getting into - is this series worth my time, or is it kind of a lost cause and I'd be better off watching something else?

But every so often, especially when I was a bit younger, I'd see a trailer for something and think to myself, "I absolutely HAVE to see that!!" I didn't bother looking up reviews or asking friends about it. The trailer itself excited me so much that I'd forgo my usual research.

This happened to me about ten years ago when I saw a trailer for Black Lion. It was epic - fast-paced swordfighting, explosions, cyborg samurai, lasers and guns, ninjas flipping around and slashing at one another, all accompanied by thunderous music. After 90 seconds, all I could think was, "WOW! If the trailer is this awesome, imagine what the actual anime must be like!!" Granted, the anime itself was only okay, but the trailer had really hooked me. I didn't bother asking anyone else if they'd seen it, or looking up any reviews, all I knew after seeing the trailer was, "I have GOT to see this! NOW!"

So, what about your experiences? Anything like this ever happen to you? If so, after you got excited by the trailer, what did you think after you watched the anime? Did it live up to your expectations or not? Discuss!

most of the anime I bought or buy will be from the package itself don't care if others loved or hated it I decide purchase by purchase myself if the plot or the art they show is not to my liking it'll stay on the shelf.

reviews are not worth the time they took to type up simply because we could have widely differing tastes to begin with.

by the time i see a trailer for an anime I've either seen it already or decided to not see it.

Nope. I don't blind buy anime without having seen or read enough about it beforehand.

I will watch streams based on promos and trailers.

I used to. Bought Gasaraki based on just this awesome trailer alone. Nowadays I've watched almost everything that I buy in fansub format first, so I don't really need a trailer. And since I use online lists of upcoming Anime to help plan my seasonal viewing schedule, I don't really need trailers at all, ever. They're nice to watch but are losing their relevance, at least to me.

I used to buy titles based on trailers alone all the time. When I did, I generally had a pretty high success rate at choosing series that I ended up liking; my biggest find that way was probably Ai Yori Aoshi, a series that I probably otherwise wouldn't have touched but ended up immensely enjoying. I think Voices of a Distant Star also first came to my attention that way.

Two things have changed that over the past couple of years. One has been my regular work on the seasonal Preview Guides, which means I watch at least one episode of nearly every TV title that comes out. The only things which catch my attention purely based on trailers anymore are older stuff, OVAs, and movies. The other is that, over the past 2-3 years, most companies have stopped putting much effort into making trailers. A lot of trailers these days are just the opener.

Special Duty Combat Unit Team Shinesman. OK, so the trailer ended up having most of the good lines from the show, but it was all I needed to see to buy it!

Of course it was hard not to see anything about it a few months ago when it was revealed it would be released as a US distributor facilitated import next month, but I pre-ordered Kara no Kyoukai and all I have ever seen of it was a single preview. I guess seeing how I enjoyed Tsukihime helps, since it at least has a bit of correlation in subject matter it seems, but seeing a dark violent trailer is really what hooked me. I thought of Boogiepop Phantom, Tsukihime, and maybe a little Paranoia agent all combined together after seeing the trailer and knew I had to get the series.

I have done that on occassion when watching a series and they have previews in the opening. I've also usually read about it in the only printed trade mag in the USA right now.

Thats how I learned about Beck, GunsxSwords, Trigun and Phantom Requiem and Heat Guy J. I didn't think I was going to like Sgt frog the Japanese seiyuu although they did a great job their voices were that high squeaky minnie mouse on helium voices that kinda grate on your nerves (if you know what I mean) but the English dub was great I liked it better, the zany antics were hilarious.

Does FMA Brotherhood count? Other than direct sequels I usually
won't buy a series based on a trailer alone. That said I've rented and
plan to rent countless more shows due to trailers I've seen.

Not exactly, most of the time when I go looking for new anime to stream I'll check out the chart for the new season before all the trailers are out, although I did watch Steins;Gate just because of the phrase "they have a microwave that sends text messages through time." And I agree with Key, I'm just not as impressed with the trailers put out by US companies these days so that may be part of it (I think the only two I liked recently were for The King of Eden and Utena and I was already going to buy those two anyway).

Yes, all the time. This website's plot descriptions and trailers/series openings are usually integral components to the process at which I choose something. Off the top of my head I remember Infinite Ryvius and Scryed having particularly compelling trailers that got me to pick up or watch the show.

Honestly.......? Only two come to mind: Shangri-La and Eden of the East.

Eden was really the only series that I immediately watched on impulse from the trailer alone. Didn't know who was behind it, who was part of it, nothing. I just saw the preview, and said "I have to see this now." I wasn't disappointed.

Shangri-La was a different story. It looked interesting in the previews, but I never went past the first episode. Wasn't so much a lack of interest as it was other stuff taking priority. Now, I just don't really care about it. And from what I can tell, it's left a sour taste in some people's mouths, so I might avoid it altogether if I don't procrastinate.

I wanted to say "Oh yea, all the time" because I usually do buy shows for the most inane reasons (ooooh that cover is pretty). But looking at my shelves, the only trailer-inspired purchase was Hetalia. For most everything else I haven't even seen their trailers, or I was going to buy them anyways and the trailers only gave me hopes.

Now there are shows that I plan on buying because of trailers, but I haven't yet. But even then, of the ~100 things I plan to buy, Nanaka 6/17, Escaflowne, Sekirei, and Very Private Lesson are trailer inspired.

I'll buy a show for it's packaging or because of it's place in anime, but trailers never really seem to sway me that much.

EDIT: Oh yea, I forgot Tengho Tenge - I bought that because of it's trailer which actually just it's OP. I forgot about it because it's not on my shelf, but in my sell pile...

I've never really bought anything based upon the trailer. In fact I don't think I ever really tend to watch any anime trailers, every now and then I'll see a link, but I rarely watch them.

However several times I have gone out and bought an entire anime box set after hearing something was good, or hearing/reading something interesting and merely going to watch the Opening on youtube Laughing Several things I have bought have depended completely upon my opinion of ~1 minute 30ish seconds of animation Very Happy

I don't think I ever watch trailers at all Anime or movies. I think the only thing that made me want to see was when I was younger and saw the Trailer for Akira. My mind was blown!
