Well to be honest, not entirely sure why he won. Not like it isn't exceptional work. But it looks too fantastical. If I was actually asked what show his "gunpla" came from, I think I may have said something like Five Star Stories over Gundam.

I think it depends on what the judges were looking for. From my impression of these contests, their usually broken up into different categories. What little I know of this one, its just plain came down one category. What look best.
I personally think they should broke it up more by category, pure canon, custom, best perfect work. etc.
Winning gunpla was stunning, but i like Diorama one myself, with glowing "eyes" and all. It had more detail in that than rest of them. Again, it should broken up more.

With the MG Jesta Havoc being gray, it doesn't have to worry much about losing its color through battling and exposure.
