Did the anime follow the Manga or novel or what ever the fudge to the end or did it take an alternate ending?

The last episode of the anime lines up with the final chapter of the manga. (The manga's the original source material.)

The manga ended a few months earlier, giving the anime enough space to animate every chapter.

Glad there was no discussion about the whole 'Sakamoto being dead' theory in the analysis. I've heard quite enough of that.
