I guess Japan is one of very few (or possibly only?) countries where animated films are able to top annual box office earnings and overshadow their own live-actions (and even Hollywood blockbusters) by wide margin.

Japan is the only country that has developed sequential art/comics as a full artistic mass medium and hence are the only culture that has a varied and well developed animation industry. No other country in the world comes remotely close to Japan in these fields, although Chinese comics and animation are developing fast.

Sadly that is not the case with the critics though. While anime is much bigger than live action film in terms of revenues apparently Japanese film critics are as prejudiced against the medium as Western critics if not even more so. They almost don't even talk about animated films in their top movies of the year and when they rarely do they list the most family friendly stuff. For example, Hideaki Anno made several animated films, never won a thing, then he makes a Godzilla live action film and, boom, wins the Japanese academy awards and gets 2nd place in the Kinema Jumpo rankings. And he even said the Godzilla film was just something for him to warm up before going for his serious project EVA 4.

It has been pretty nice to see many of those anime movies in the cinema outside of Japan this last year.

Conan was pretty nice in the cinema man.
