The news broke just about an hour or so ago, and I still haven't been able to process this.
Rurouni Kenshin is one of my favorite anime/manga. It's one of my gateway anime. To this day the duel between Kenshin and Saitou remains etched in my memory. I want to separate the work from the man but I don't know if I can. How can such a great work come out of a man who's obsessed with child porn? This is the closest I have come to feeling a broken heart over a creative work. It feels like a betrayal, like the values and themes Watsuki presented in Rurouni Kenshin, Buso Renkin, and his other work were little more than lies. I just hope Oda isn't caught up in this in any way. He was Watsuki's assistant for YEARS before One Piece. Otherwise this is going to get a whole lot worse. |

Oh god, Rurouni Kenshin was a childhood favorite of mine. I would spend hours past midnight on school days trying to read as much of the manga as I could without my parents knowing I was still up. Not sure if I can ever read/watch it again after this.....

Part of why this seems so out of the blue is that from having read his work, I never got the impression that Watsuki was into girls to the extent that he'd just give THAT as his statement on the matter. If the news headline had said "Kenichi Sonoda charged with child pornography possession" I don't think anybody would have batted an eye.
It's a shame that the Rurouni Kenshin sequel had only just gotten off the ground, as it'll almost certainly be canceled over these developments (and just as Sanosuke was about to return, too). I don't think it necessarily means the end of Watsuki's career, though. After all, Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro hired child prostitutes and went to jail BEFORE creating Toriko. |

Since I'm very interested in the Historical genre especially when it has samurais included I plan to read it or start reading it. This was a series I was planning to read and probably watch after reading. It'll probably be hard for me now honestly whenever I'll try to start reading it and seeing the front cover of a volume and being reminded the guy that created this was into...this type of "stuff"

I saw this on /a/ on 4chan I guess this confirms it if Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro can come back after what he got caught doing Watsuki may be able to come back from it. I highly doubt it though and honestly it's more than a little sickening I was never a big Kenshin fan but I have friends that are. The heart of man is deceitfully wicked above all things I guess.

Well, "owning" is a really simple term anyway. As long as Watsuki-sensei never does anything like actually doing the physical molesting of young girls, it's really gonna be irrelevant to Rurouni's legacy. I am really hoping his honest confession about liking little girls is just an obsession and he never did anything of such sort. It's gonna break the hearts of his fans with feeble hearts and mindsets.

Is this garbage for real? Seriously? First Hiromi Tsuru passes away, now this? I don't know if this will ever affect my reading Kenshin in the future or not. People still like Roman Polanski's movies and they're all widely available even after what he's done. But this is absolute trash, and I never would have guessed somebody who seemed as cool as Watsuki was so sick. Really makes you wonder what all the other mangaka you admire are hiding. Nobody's perfect, but... Anyway, this is bound to have consequences. Probably Viz is going to stop distributing Kenshin and cancel all future releases.

Not to be that guy, but I think people are freaking out way too much over this. As the article already stated, child pornography didn't become illegal until 2014, and that teen idol stuff was all over the place. Still is in some places. I don't personally agree with this content, but it's not surprising that people would still have a lot of that stuff lying around. It wasn't illegal afterall.

Most likely manga will be canceled because of that. And any chance of anime remake has now probably died as well. Ugh... Just... why, Watsuki?
