I bought "read or die" tuesday then got the time to watch it yesterday afternoon. All I got to say is wow! I am very impressed with this short series. I liked it better than the cowboy bebop movie. Anybody else have anything to say about this brilliant anime.

I thought ms. deep was kickass, and yea it does sound like a porn star name.

Yeah R.O.D was great,it was stylish mix of bond, indiana jones and a superhero movie. The animation was fantastic and the music was pretty decent. Also the action sequences were some of the best I have seen in anime in a long time. Before I watched it I thought the whole idea of her controlling paper sounded rather lame but in practice it worked great.

The fight choregraphy was awesome in that series. The special abilities were unique and used really well during the fights. The way Yomiko used paper to clamp around things and the way Nancy used her power to avoid physical hits... it was just incredibly cool to watch.

But I particularly liked the characterisation of Yomiko. Her obsession with books was just taken to a hilarious extreme. How many people would run after bad guys and risk life & limb just to retrieve a book she hasn't read yet? And then when she does recover it, it's like she's been reunited with a dear lover. Endearingly eccentric.

My only complaint is that they should have just made it one movie instead of three seperate OVAs. It would have flowed a little better. Also, I thought it was a bit cheesy to have the theme song play at ever climax. It was kind of annoying and took away the surprise. It's like "Oh cue the R.O.D. theme! Oh! Something important's gonna happen!"

Aside from that, I thought it was a really great short series. Well animated, very different, and I defintely like the curvacious character designs. Twisted Evil

Um... you know, it was released on three separate discs in Japan. That's why it's broken up into three episodes, amazingly enough.

Yes, I know that. I'm just saying it should have just been made into one movie instead of a three-part OVA. Unless it was gonna be a longer OVA series, I think a feature film would have been a better format for this size a project. Sorta like what they did with Spriggan.

I personally thought the show was rather fun, it had some pretty original ideas. The animation was nice an it was over all an enjoyable, and fun show. However, The show didn't do it for me. As I said the show had pretty original ideas, however the over all execution of the show was very typical, and not very original. It was goo and entertaining but nothing impressive.

Has the TV series aired in Japan yet? It keeps getting bumped back from what I've been told by a friend over there now.

Exactly! Couldn't have put it better. Well animated and such-and-such, but like that theme popping up at obvious moments and other clichéd stuff like "taking over the world" plots and some lame one-dimensional characters, overall, the execution was a B- for unoriginality. But somehow, I still found it enjoyable, if only because the unoriginality added to it's campiness.

So is it original or not? Smile

Personally, I see this as one of the most original series I've seen in years. I loved the idea of "superheroes" working as agents of the British Library. The technical designs, such as all the quirky machines in the good guy's office, were quite unique.

And, yeah, it was a good old-fashioned "secret agency tries to stop evil madman from destroying the world" plot. But it was a heck of an original take on it. If you're going to slam an anime for following a classic plot, you might want to find yourself another hobby, since the vast majority anime won't appeal to you.

It wasnt supposed to be challenging or have a groundbreaking plot but rather was just made to entertain and thats exactly what it does.

Hey hey check it out my avatar works. Very Happy

Ahem. I thought that it was entertainming and definitely different.
Do we really pick apart anime that much that we become hyper critical.

There are no more original ideas, don't you know that. Wink

I don't recall slamming the show. I remember saying that it was an enjoying and fun show. So if I must answer your question, Yes the show has original concepts, but No it is not an original show. Now, for you to tell me to look for other hobbies, just because I expresed my opinion. I would think You are the one doing the slamming on my comments. So just because you can't tolerate criticism on shows that you like, that doesn't give you the right to attack my hobbies. Learn to accept criticism before you tell others what they should practice as hobbies. But anyways, by your response you seem to agree that R.O.D contains a classic plot and a very tried one at that. You even took it a step further and said the vast majority of anime suffers of the same. So, do YOU really wanna continue practicing a hobbie that lacks originality? Are you that simple to be satisfied with watching the same story over and over, as long as they just change a few things here and there?

And entertain it does in a very good way.

It is not a matter of being hyper critical or not. When you see the same formula in anime over and over so many times, it makes no difference if they add or change little things here and there, because it will be the same show no matter what. Thats not being hyper critical it is just common sense after watching anime for such long time. It is a sad thing to acknowledge that original ideas are hard to find in anime now a days. However that doesn't mean that we have to go head over heels over a show when they only manage to improve a little bit on tried and used formulas. We don't have to accept everything we are being fed and think it is the greatest thing ever done. Which brings me back to my original post. R.O.D. was extremely fun, but short of impressive.

I enjoyed R.O.D very much, bought the DVD, and eagerly await the TV series.

I gave it an A- in my review.

Geez, take a deep breath and relax. I didn't mean literally that you should quit watching anime. I was merely responding to the idea that R.O.D didn't "do it for you", and that it seemed to be because you thought the plot was worn out.

Dude, I don't have a problem with Read or Die. You seem to.

I personally don't care if an anime plot goes back over well-tread ground, as long as it offers something new in the process. Read or Die did. (For contrast, Love Hina didn't.)

Look, forgive me for seeming like an a-hole here, but I'm totally lost. First you say Read or Die "didn't do it for you". Then you say it "entertains in a very good way". Then you say it was "extremely fun", but not "impressive".

Did you enjoy the show or not? If you did, what's the problem?

Please don't misinterpret me. I don't have a problem with criticizing stuff I like. I do it all the time in my review column. It's just that the criticisms you leveled against the show would seem to preclude it being entertaining: "tired", "unoriginal", and of course "didn't do it for me".
