It feels so great to have Tokyo Godfathers back in print. For a long time it was my favorite Kon film, and watching it in the mid-noughties trans representation was rare enough that Hana's mere presence felt progressive.
A few years ago, my nephew pulled it off the shelf. He was into anime at the time, but he'd also recently come out to us as genderqueer and trans. After agreeing to watch it, I had a second thought and had a quick side conversation with him just to acknowledge in advance what a ham-fisted mess it makes of trans representation.
We watched it anyway, but I was seeing it with fresh eyes, and it made a different impression on me. He's quiet about everything and I didn't want to force him into a conversation about something so intimate that he was still muddling through himself, but I've always wondered what he felt about it.
Anyway. It's a wonderful film, and putting Shakina Nayfack in the dub was a brilliant move – I'm looking forward to hearing that.
