Either set in Okinawa or featuring Okinawan characters? Most of the ones that I’ve seen or read that are in the real world are set in Tokyo.

If memory serves, the Blood+ anime is initially set in Okinawa. However, it goes worldwide after the initial arc. I believe Mugen from Samurai Champloo is supposed to come from the island chain which includes Okinawa.

There is a manga set in a training school for singers. The name escapes me at the moment but I'll see if I can find it in my deep storage.

Of course a lot of series have visits to Okinawa as a plot device but I assume that is not what you are looking for.

Noriko - the main character from Gunbuster - is from Okinawa. The first episode is set largely in the Okinawa High School for Girls and, although she spends much of the rest of the series in space, the series returns regularly so we keen see what her friends are doing.

I found the manga. It is B.B. Explosion by Yasu Imai. It was issued in the US by Viz in five volumes between 3/2004 and 3/2005. Most of it takes place in Okinawa though they do get to preform in Tokyo at the end. Even a lion dog from the family gate post has a part.

The beach volleyball series Harukana Receive takes place in Okinawa. Of the two main characters, Kanata Higa is a native of Okinawa.

The main character of Hagure Idol Jigokuhen is from Okinawa. It's often mentioned in the manga as a plot point. The majority of the story doesn't take place in Okinawa but there are a few times where the character goes back to visit family. I believe there is an anime in production for this title but it isn't out yet. Fair warning: while it isn't a porno it does contain a lot of adult content.

A major arc of Azumanga Daioh involves the characters taking a school trip to Okinawa. There is both anime and manga for this title.

Thank you for responding. Smile

Yes. I knew about Blood+ and Samurai Champloo. Watching Samurai Champloo is part of the reason that I asked the question. Tokyo is great, but it would be interesting to see different parts of Japan in manga and anime and Okinawa is probably the most unique culturally along with Hokkaido, because it was semi-independent until the 19th century.

I’ll take what I can get. I know that there are several series where they visit Okinawa for vacations. Great Tracher Onizuka, Beelzebub, Azumanga Daioh, Gyo, Evangelion (they were supposed to go, but I don’t remember if they actually did) and Detective Conan also has some episodes there too. It’s one of the things that I liked about the show. They’re mostly in Tokyo or Osaka, but they do quite a bit of travelling to other parts of the country.

Yes. I just found it recently when I was doing a search. Thanks. Smile

I didn’t know about the first one. I’ll give it a look. Thanks! Smile

I'm guessing Okinawa must be a common destination for real-life Japanese school trips otherwise it wouldn't be so common in anime. As for Evangelion, Shinji's classmates do indeed to go Okinawa for their school trip but none of it is shown or mentioned beyond that. The main characters are stuck at home, don't go on the trip, and they never mention Okinawa again.

I know you specifically asked about Okinawa but you might check out Yurucamp if you like titles which show of different regions and their specialties. It hasn't covered Okinawa (yet) but it does have very realistic depictions of other parts of Japan. I'd also suggest the real-life documentary series "Japanology" produced by NHK. Many of its episodes focus on regional food, architecture, etc.

I don't remember which specific city, but the light novel-based harem anime "Cat Planet Cuties" takes place in Okinawa.
