The Super Cub anime is especially egregious about this because in the original novel, Koguma DOES attempt to call for help, but Shii tells her not to because she doesn't want her parents to worry. Not sure why the anime decided to omit that detail, as it showed that Koguma at least tried to make an effort to do the right thing, even though she decided not to do so because Shii asked her not to.

Tamayura is one of the best iyashikei hobby anime ever made. At its core, it's about how a hobby can expand our world and give us some purpose or direction in life. Centered around photography, it is written and directed by the great Junichi Sato of Sailor Moon, Princess Tutu, the aforementioned Amanchu, and Aria fame.

I like Tamayura. It's a pity that Tamayura is very underrated and safe to say -- forgoten anime.

Something I could never have imagined when I started watching anime, I have really got to enjoy this genre. And if it's a good show, the subject doesn't even matter too much. I mean, I (still) don't care for camping at all, but that doesn't make Yuru Camp any bit less brilliant.

As for the pilgrimages, even when I have visited Japan 16 times by now, I never really went out of my way for locations just because they were in an anime. However, I just cannot watch these series without trying to find every single shot in Streetview. As a result, a single episode can take me several hours to watch Embarassed
(I am still frustrated though that I visited the Nanto area and several specific locations from Sakura Quest while that show was airing without ever noticing it...I thought it was all fictional....)

There's one more aspect series like these can also fail: by showing the hobby as being way too expensive. A few years ago we had two (at best mediocre) CGDCT-shows about cycling in successive seasons, first Long Riders and then another one with a way too long title to remember. In LR it was mostly a running gag that everything is expensive, even though (much like in Yuru Camp or Super Cub) it was still well within reach from the average high schooler with a part time job. In that other show however it is more or less said you should only buy the bike that feels right for you.....even when that's a professional racing bike from a top brand that costs more than some of my cars have. And absolutely nothing less will do. If there's one effective way to make people loose interest in a hobby before they even started....

If we trace all this way back it probably started with Azumanga Daioh. Which has nothing to do with the hobby IIRC,

In my opinion, the hobby part is just an excuse to introduce variety to the core idea, which is good. I remember after Azumanga Daioh debuted we get more of the same school anime with varying formulas. among others;

Ichigo Mashimaro (cute and sugary, precursor to Gochiusa / Kinmoza)
Hidamari Sketch
Sketchbook; full colors (very underrated IMO)
GA Geijutsuka Art Design Class (another gem)
Lucky Star
Hyakko
..and then we get
K-ON
the rest is history.

I’ve been a strong fan of SOL anime and enjoy every iteration of it unless if they really really suck (there are a few). The article already discussed many great examples of anime and their variations. they’re spot on. I enjoy reading it.

But let’s stray away from “hobby” and explore from a very different perspective. If we examine above title and beyond it’s obvious they all feature young adult or to be exact, teenage girls (and many, like Azumanga are 4koma in origin). But funny that all my nieces and nephew don’t care much about these kind of anime. They rather watch reverse harem or shounen stuff. SOL / CGDCT are way more popular with adults (among my peers is). I bet it does in Japan too. I’m sure there’s a huge market in SOL, iyashikei and it’s picking up everywhere.

Why? I question myself why do I (and a whole bunch dude) enjoy reading / watching CGDCT show?

Rather than enjoying relaxing vibes to the storyline, I believe that it caters to our understanding deep down that raising children (especially girls) is hard. So we watch this type of anime instead. Most of the characters we saw are very reliable teenagers, or at least being guided by responsible role model. They live in safe environment. They might act undesirable sometimes, mostly used by the author as a part of comedy.

Chiyo-chan is adorable and precocious. Shima Rin is capable and responsible. Yui is talented. Ui is caring. And list goes on. Ok wait.. Koguma is unique.. But we get it.

So many characters that exemplify desireable qualities of teenagers that many can root for. And we can find them all in CGDCT anime.

I want to write some more but too sleepy and don't know how to end my post..
God bless the girl .

Hurrah! Someone else who remembers Tamayura! I came here to mention that very same thing. Another thing was the main character was using her late father's Rollei 35 as a way of dealing with her loss and bonding with his memory. It was a lovely show.

I think I've watched all the shows mentioned in this article, although the only thing I recall about Bakuon!! was that one of the characters was the Stig's Japanese cousin.

Though I can't end without commenting on the second season of Laid Back Camp. That show had some moments of such sublime scenic beauty that I almost cried at how beautiful the scenery looked and how much I'd love to be able to see that vista in reality with my own eyes.

I also really liked Tamayura when it first came out. I even own the first season on DVD! Not sure if the second season ever got a DVD release though. I ought to rewatch it some time.

They're also all girls. None of these shows have a male character of any significance, at least not that I can remember; if there's any it's usually a "safe" type, like a grandpa or someone other who can't be ever seen as "threatening", or if there's a sexual angle to his presence it's very clearly wrong and/or comical, so he's still not a threat. I'm not saying this as a judgement - on the opposite end of the scale, the Cute Boys Doing Various Kinds Of Stuff shows we're finally getting, similarly either don't have any significant female characters, or they're the "safe" kind, like sisters, mothers or aunts, fellow fangirls (who are somehow not romantically/sexually interested the boys), etc.

But again, they're all girls. If it was simply about seeing teenagers with desireable qualities that people can root for why is it always one gender to the point of complete exclusivity? I mean some of these CGDCT shows are like the kids exist in a world without any males whatsoever. (Weirdly enough Cute Boys Doing Stuff shows tend to have one or two token female characters, I suppose as an excuse. Except for the idol genre, I guess, no women there.)

So, let me sit in my armchair and light a pipe - my theory is that for the target audience* these shows are engineered to be basically a lighter and non-sexual** version of the harem fantasy, where instead of romance the viewer gets to watch the characters do fun and harmless things, while also being sure that they will not experience any feelings of being inadequate, being judged, threatened, embarrassed, etc. There's no male (female) character to compare oneself to; the characters are mostly very wholesome so there's no potential for judgement on their part, and the group dynamics are such that even if the viewer was actually part of the group they wouldn't feel the need to compete for anyone's attention or acceptance. And of course the characters are school-aged, which carries the implication of being pure in soul, not having had experiences that come with growing up and grown-up life, which may be comforting to grown-ups who don't want to be reminded of those experiences.

*Yes, I'm perfectly aware that a lot of women of all kinds of sexual preferences like CGDCT shows, but the target audience is still men.
**Although let's be honest, the Ichigo Mashimaro anime may have been wholesome, but the manga was really unsubtle about its lolicon leanings.

This is a very well written script, Michael. You have a knack for balancing length and information. E.g. I haven't watched Super Cup, but it was easy to follow the situation based on your description, yet it didn't feel like you went into too much details. I'm saying this because I don't think many people get this balance right. Looking forward to more from you in the future.

Hobby anime is a topic I've been interested in for years (not only watching, but also as a relatively isolated phenomenen exclusive to the Japanese mediascape). I wonder if anyone ever compiled an extensive list of titles.

It is winter here and it is not even an option to camp alone in the cold, damn no, but I like how these girls aka rin are so responsible when camping

now my dream is to scuba diving in a Caribbean sea, I dont know how to do it and I would take classes but amanchu and even grand blue can give you general ideas of what you need to know

I wanted to do it this summer vacations in January, but the pandemic made it impossible I hope I can do it next year
