This was truly a loss. Nihei was one of the original Science Patrol members, the loveable Ide. He was charming, always had a bright smile, and brilliant--many of the SP's weapons and tools were invented by him, and if he didn't make it he'd find a way to improve it
Nihei also really sold what IMO was the best Ultraman episode, "The Earth Is My Home". There, a mutated astronaut names Jamila returns to Earth to carry out their revenge upon the United Nations after being left for dead on an alien planet. Goofy old Ide bitterly stands by and watches as the UN contracts the Science Patrol to handle Jamila. The ending of the episode is one that sticks with you: the UN sets up a too-little-too-late plaque for Jamila after Ultraman defeats him, and goofy loveable Ide bitterly stares at it as the sun sets and his teammates call out to him, cursing the UN for throwing a man under the bus so easily. "Only their words are pretty" indeed.
Rest easy, Nihei. The children of the world thank you. I hope you rest easy in the Land of Light.
