As of now I have vol 1 and 2 of the Negima manga and dvd 1 and 2 of the anime. Im the kind of person though that likes to read the manga before I see the anime so does anybody know which volume the anime ends at?

The anime goes away from the manga around episode 22. From there to the end the anime is totally different from the manga. I really didn't like the sudden change in the story that it took, honestly. I would have given the anime a much higher rating if not for it's ending.
Anyway, the anime really doesn't end with anything like the manga and a lot of things happen in the anime a little differently than it did in the manga too.
I don't have the manga at hand but I don't think the anime went further than around Volume 7 or 8.

Also, volumes 4-6 of the manga are condensed into episodes 20 and 21 of the anime. I didn't have a problem with the anime ending, but I hadn't read the manga beforehand. In fact, I'd suggest watching the anime first, because you'll get more enjoyment out of it that way.
And it's not like they had a good stopping place in the manga; it was either "create an original ending" or leave things feeling very incomplete.

Like Zalis said, the last portion of the manga covered is volume 6, though its heavily condensed, and then the anime created its own ending.
Watch the anime first. If you read the manga first, it will probably be hard to enjoy the anime when you realize how much they cut out and changed.
If the anime had excercised good pacing, they should have been able to end with the Field Trip arc and cover all of the important things. The end of the Field Trip arc would work as a great ending to the series. It's everything after that would work poorly as an ending since vol. 7-8 are just a lead in to the School Festival arc which is still going (currently around volume 17).

I actually gave Negima a try hoping that it wasn't quite as frivolous and poorly animated as the negative press on here and elsewhere had claimed. It turned out that ANN was actually right on the money all along. Even ecchi series can be as amusing and enjoyable as any other genre, but I really never picked up on what was supposed to be so amusing about Negima. A story about the daily life of little kids can be a lot of fun, but not if it feels like it was actually written, directed, and scored by little kids. Kids who apparently had an unnatural appreciation for Harry Potter. Maybe I'm being overly harsh but I'm truly surprised how well received Negima seemed to be after the serious lashings it got in several reviews for lack of both technical and artistic merit.

By the way, I would agree with Hitokiri and Zalis, watch the anime first then read the manga. You'll probably be able to enjoy both much more that way.
I read before I watched and it really did make the anime more annoying to me.

Well I read volumes 1 and 2 of the manga before watching the first 2 dvd's. I still really enjoyed the anime so far even though having read the manga first. I really don't want to watch the anime first because having known whats going to happen makes it harder to buy the manga, I end up buying something I haven't read yet, thats why Im having trouble finishing some of my longer series I have like Dragon Ball Z and Inuyasha. So after volume 8 I would be in the clear to finish the anime?

Everyone here is saying, "Watch the anime first." I've got a better idea, skip the anime entirely and just go with the manga. The anime has almost no original material, and what of it that is unique to the anime mostly isn't worth the time, with the exception of episode 19 (the one focusing on Sayo, the ghost girl).
As for the original question of how far you'll have to read before there are no more corresponding anime episodes, Volume 6 is pretty much the last of the manga that's covered by the anime, with the one exception of episode 19 is like an extended version of a single chapter in volume 9. The weird thing is, the order of the anime episodes is a bit different from the manga. For example, the vampire episodes (6-8) are the 3rd volume, while the dodgeball match which comes later in the anime is in the first volume of the manga, and the Baka Rangers bit comes primarily from the second volume. Various parts of the Kyoto field trip (volume 4-6) were removed from that context and made into stand-alone episodes that occur before the Kyoto trip in the anime.
If you plan on watching the Spring OVA (which hasn't been liscensed yet as far as I know), that corresponds roughly with the last two chapters of Vol 7.
