The game looks pretty cheaply made and thrown together as an excuse to put the characters in various costumes. But that still means it'll probably turn out better than the anime itself.

And of course now I learn that this wasn't even an original anime at all, but an ad for a mobile game that hasn't come out yet.

Even the spin-off manga came out before the anime. That probably should have been the tip off (unless animation issues were that bad they had to delay it).

It is original. But it's also mixed media, hence why there are anime/manga/game.

Their X/Twitter even says original TV anime (オリジナルTVアニメ).

Judging by the list of corporate sponsors I expect a LOT of goods/crossovers. Gotta sell to meet everyone's profit expectations.

There's a reason why most sites separate "original" from "mixed media" in categorization. They are not the same thing; one is the result of people having an idea and putting it out there, the other is just to try to sell people on other things. And anime like this show the quality issues that arise with the latter, especially in a post-Uma Musume world where other companies keep making the mistake of thinking they can successfully sell a game that's six months to a year away.

*Literally an anime about racing*

*Makes a visual novel instead of a racing game*

SERIOUSLY?!

They are not the same, but they are NOT mutually exclusive.

When sites only allow one category despite multiple being applicable, well, you would only see one and not the others.

Example: Engage Kiss
MAL - Original
Wikipedia - Mixed media (first line of first paragraph)

Original mixed media would be when a franchise was planned to be multimedia from the beginning, typically with anime/manga/LN/game timed to release within months of each other.

And if we're going to use Wikipedia as a source (lol), nowhere is Highspeed Etoile listed as a mix-media project there. Yet here we are, with the show now transparently just being a vehicle to advertise in-app purchases (in addition to all the logos slapped onto every surface of the show itself; buy WIXOSS cards now!)

I thought it was very obvious when Etoile was announced that it was going to have game tie-ins. The numerous companies that signed on as sponsors is a telltale sign.
Set your expectations low should be the norm, not the exception.

Still doesn't change the fact that it's an original franchise that launched with manga/anime with mobile game to follow (pretty standard move to launch with anime to drive up hype and then release game where the real revenue lies). Now to see if it'll last longer than Engage Kiss with all the companies' moneys backing it.

Probably not because Emgage Kiss was actually pretty good and the quality was good as well.
