Does that voluntary retirement come with some sort of incentive? Otherwise, it looks like they are just asking people to leave before layoffs happen.

If You paid me that much to "retire" I'd take that in a heartbeat! Granted, due to the cost of living in Japan that's not really a lot, but you'd be fine for a bit while you looked for something else.

It's worth keeping in mind that Japan has much stronger employee protection laws that the USA does, and companies can't just do mass layoffs for no reason. To fire somebody, a company must have a valid reason (from a small list of acceptable reasons) and also provide 30 days notification. Firing an employee without going through the proper procedures can result in huge fines. I'm sure this company is asking for voluntary retirements so they don't have to deal with all the legal issues that come along with terminating somebody.

Still, they're not required to offer severance, and that's a very nice retirement package.

I imagine it'll also be taxed into oblivion as well. Probably just enough to pay off my house, take a trip and a year off before I'm broke again...

Do they even have 80 people at "retirement" age? Still sounds like they're just paying people to quit if there's no age limit.
