It's a good reminder that if you want the best value out of these, it's always worth it to wait for the PUK expansion to release and see how it adds to or changes up the gameplay.
I've not actually had an opportunity to sit with 8's Remake yet, but I've been hearing that some aspects of it can meander a bit, and that if you're not 100% all-in on the roleplaying aspect of it, you may be a bit underwhelmed in spots. It is however, a good basis for a well-made PUK to actually give it a nice finish, so hopefully that's what happens when it fully releases.
The Romance of the Three Kingdoms series is actually on sale series-wide right now, so it's a very solid time to give them a try. I would personally advocate for RotTK XIII with its PUK, as it's one of the most story-oriented and full-featured games in the series for strategy players, BUT! that comes with the warning that you need to check that it runs on your system without crashing because certain hardware has troubles with it.
A lot of established players have their favorite versions either due to features or nostalgia, but when a new player is wanting to try one of these, I will always advocate that they start with the one that has the best story presentation, as it gives you a lot more context for your actions as you play. RotTK XIII is a pretty great example of this, however if it doesn't run well on your hardware, then RotTK 8 shouldn't be too bad of a place to start, especially if you want to eventually make your own officer and see how far you can take them - I just cant vouch for the specifics of it since I'm still waiting for the PUK to make my final judgement on it.
