Sounds like a lot for a company that small and a market with fierce competition. Good luck.

Seven Seas is by no means a "small" company. They've been around for 20 years or so, have made tons of inroads into the English manga market, & until now were the only "major" manga publisher in North America to still be independently owned. (Yeah, TokyoPop still exists, but they're more like a "big indie" at this point, & nowhere near the major player they once were)

In terms of the news, though, it is worth pointing out that there are reports that a lot of the actual staff at Seven Seas only found out about this purchase when the Nikkei report went live earlier today, and in fact Seven Seas had a panel today at the virtual Citrus Con where the reps prided the company for being 100% independently owned & how it would never rely on AI for any translations... and about an hour after their panel ended the purchase was officially announced, complete with promoting how Media Do will be using its AI translation to "assist translators in translating manga into English".

In other words, the management at Seven Seas completely failed its own staff today by not letting them known in advance of the purchase, which in turn led to them accidentally lying about the company in an official panel mere moments before the news became official.

Seven Seas is one of the most prominent distributor's for manga at the moment, and especially for light novels. So they definitely are worth a lot of money.

This is really unfortunate. Of all the companies to be bought by, it's one with a history of supporting stuff like AI translations and NFTs.
I feel so bad for the staff and how this was just spring on them, and especially the ones who were at the panel.

Oh geez, I saw this announcement on social media and a lot of people are very concerned about that because earlier Seven Seas has pledged they'll never use A.I for their translation, this was before Media Do swooped in with this announcement that they're buying Seven Seas Entertainment and I read it that even employees of Seven Seas weren't aware of this until they found out online. So this is just surprising to many manga fans in the US when I read about it on social media.

Sounds about right for corporate America.
I used to work for a company that had massive layoffs that were announced on an entertainment TV program before telling the employees, mere weeks after they had a meeting specifically to lie to us about there being no layoffs planned.
Like, I wouldn't be half as mad if they, you know, didn't go out of their way to lie to us, but that's what corpo does these days.

How many companies buying one another do we need? Is there not a single person who can resist getting a little successful and some random force of evil coming in like "Hey, we're here to wreck your shit"?

Look, Media Do, if you're somehow seeing this I'm just gonna keep it simple. Seven Seas puts out a number of my favorite titles, I'm buying their books very regularly, to the tune of nearly 600 volumes of their manga titles in my collection currently, with a couple more added this weekend. I won't spend a single dime on anything you use AI on, full stop.

I really hope they don’t start using AI for translation.
