Kaiju Girl has quickly become one of my favorites this season. I agree that it's the top romance anime of this season.
This is the second column in a row where I feel Oh Boy Was I Wrong is unfairly looked down upon. I think part of the problem is that some people were hoping this would be a trans story, and they're not engaging with the story as it actually is.
This is also the second column in a row where Ogre's Bride was omitted when I expected it to be mentioned. But I can't blame anyone for forgetting about it; there's not much about it that stands out, not even to dunk on.

I can comfortably say that, as a white, straight, cisgender man who looks more like a stereotypical American nerd than not, I have looked at multiple titles, at least one critically acclaimed, and wondered "What if it was trans?" And while I agree in principle that a story should not be judged against the one made up in your head, if the reason I'm making up this story is because what I'm watching isn't compelling, then that really is a knock against the show.
Also, to the reviewers' points, it's not like they can't talk about Gender without someone being trans. Even if the central conflict ends up a very chill version "can Hayato reconcile with his past memories of his best friend," there's plenty of Gender to consider, but the show doesn't appear to be doing anything with it, at least not yet.
If it ends up being just a very sedate romance, that's fine--sometimes people just want a good hang--but I imagine that's not going to garner wide appeal.

For the first column, it wasn't rated low enough to be bottom-of-the-barrel, which is possibly my fault.
For the second, it's just a romance, not a romantic comedy, and a kind of dark one at that. As an editor, I get very picky (perhaps even weirdly picky) about genre distinctions. But if they ever do a column about Cinderella retellings, The Ogre's Bride will definitely be in there!

I think the order is wrong. It's more that people watch the show and find it pretty sauceless and then think "damn if it was a trans story there'd be at least something to talk about there".

The description of how "Rich Girl Caretaker" begins makes me believe someone was cribbing notes from "Hayate the Combat Butler".
