Umm... just want to point out that the thumbnail pic is from Akane-Banashi, not from this show.

Glad to see Grant enjoying the Jan! anime, because the manga has long been a personal favorite of mine. I actually started re-reading the manga recently, since I don't use Crunchyroll, and all I can say right now is that Grant is still in the early days of the story, as these episodes only cover Volume 1.
My guess is that the anime will spend another two episodes to get the remaining early parts out of the way, before the anime moves into the primary focus of the IWJ! manga, which is the various cooking competitions, and that's where the series truly shines. I imagine the anime will, at the very least, cover up through the First National Young Adult Chinese Cooking Contest, which would cover the first five volumes of the manga.

I am still waiting for whatever unhinged thing to modern sensibilities that we are constantly reminded of by the most obnoxious screen grabbers is going to happen. Like at this point I can only think of the constant physical abuse Jan suffers from his grandfather and how the old man goes up in flames to the after life. And that doesn't really phase me except that Jan doesn't hate his grandfather for the abuse. At this point that annoying title card (not sure what to call it), screams more like western comics screaming you can't make X anymore.
Anyways, I am shouldn't make a mountain out of a molehill about my annoyance over that thing. So, far Iron Wok Jan looks stunning but the story is a bit boring. A bunch of almost vignettes of Jan showing off his skill except in one case and then manically laughing at everyone who isn't deaf. It sometimes hits and other times...I am left annoyed. I'll keep watching to see if more comes from the side characters, but I am clearly missing what makes people love this series.
