Remember when they'd rewrite the anime opening and ending themes into english? Did you like it when they did that? Are you glad they dont anymore?
Oh, I dont mean like totally write a whole new song that is completely different from the original one (Pokemon, One Piece) I mean they'd keep the music and melody the same and just change the words (Tenchi, Ruroni Kenshin) Not sure where Sailormoon falls though. It's English theme retained the same melody somewhat, they just took a lot of liberties. I didn't think much of it when first watching anime. In fact I didn't think anything of it at all. But then much later when I heard the japanese one and the english one, like if I bought an older DVD where they did that, I cant help but cringe. Some I still enjoy, like the english version of Alchemy of Love, and Washu's Lullabye (for sentimental reasons. It's still very very cheesy). Others are just bad (The english version of Freckles from RK, Sailrmoon) Also the english versions of In the Night and I'll Be there For you from Key the Metal Idol are also done well. |

While it's true I'd wish they would have kept the original in most cases, sometimes it wasn't so bad

I'm a little confused. If you mean alter the subtitle translation into something completely different, I'm actually not aware that they ever did that (I was surprised when you said Rurouni Kenshin, because if they'd changed the subtitles they could've improved the grammar...). However if your talking about dubs losing the meaning, yeah, they tend to do that.

They are talking about op/ed songs not subtitles. And...Oh, my dear Isikari! Then you have never heard what DIC did for Sailor Moon opener...aren't you lucky! Partial DIC version:
Which is fairly laughable considering Usagi/Sailor Moon's character The REAL opener translation (I got this from the Sailor Moon RPG and Resouce Book) I've seen other translated versions but this was the one that I could get to the quickest.
And I don't even want to think of the Nelvana opening for Cardcaptors. THAT makes the Sailor Moon English opener look high-class! And to answer DragonsRevenge's question...yes, I'm glad that they don't do that anymore. Those were dark days for anime!

Hehe, I remember that one. I hadn't heard it in around 10 years when I looked it up to watch the intro again, and I was still able to sing along with it. I never knew that they changed it so much... but I should have known. I just listened to the original for comparison's sake, but nostalgia has a bit of a lead in this case, even if I do find the Americanized version kind of... rough.... in comparison.

I called it "Card-Decapitators." I think I got so mad that I actually rewrote singable lyrics to Catch You Catch Me in English, myself, because I figured I could do a better job. |

SOME turned out well in English - and the example above with Tenchi Muyo happened to be one of the better examples. El-Hazard is another one. Y'know, I even enjoy the Sailor Moon opening.

Oh, God, my BRAIN!! XnX AAAAHH! You're sick! You're sick! Why would you do that?! ARGH!!! ...Yeah, they really messed up the shows with that. Not only would they change vital plot parts just for censorship (case in point: Neptune and Uranus, or Sakura and her cousin), they'd cut out episodes, and THEN torture us with the re-writes of the OP and ED. To summarize it, I hated when they did that. At least Ruroni Kenshin wasn't totally raped with Freckles or Tactics in English. I wonder why they kept Heart of Sword in Japanese, though? Excuse me while I get an ice pick for my brain.... |

FUNnimation does it with their series, right? At least, I am sure that Desert Punk has it's Opening and Ending translated, and it wasn't bad at all, I think I even liked one of the translated version better than the original, thought I don't remember witch one. Also, the French version of Card Captor Sakura wasn't too bad.

Cardcaptors....Ugh. Fortunately, the only place you usually see theme songs being dubbed these days is in the stuff aimed at the kiddy market. Unfortunately, that encompasses some anime that I actually like.
-still gets the dub theme song for Shaman King stuck in her head occasionally- >.< |

I didn't know that they used to do that, but come to think of it I kinda wish they still did. I love alot of anime theme songs, and I wish I could sing along with them. Since I dont speak Japanese, I cant. I like singing with my music, but with my op/ed songs collection, I can only hum along, which isnt so bad, but Id love to have english versions as well.

You forgot the part where they recite all the sailors. "Sailor Venus! Sailor Mercury! Sailor Mars! Sailor Jupiter!" I dunno, I kinda dig the guitar riff in the middle of the English version. (Nostalgia's playing a BIG role here.) And I kind of love that "Power of Love" song from the first Sailor Moon movie. In a purely guilty way, of course.
I'd be lying if I said I preferred the English versions of the Bubblegum Crisis songs to the Japanese ones, but I didn't completely hate them either. Both versions are cheesy nowadays, anyway (except for "Mad Machine," the best song evar). You know, to be completely honest I don't think I'd really mind so much if they still did that. I watch everything with subs anyway, so I'd hear the originals, and it's kind of fun to hear the song in two languages depending on what language track you have on. |

Most of the English versions that were done "back in the day" in no way whatsoever corresponded to the original Japanese. They were trying to make it American child friendly...or at least if the parents heard it, it was child friendly. That and back then they thought (perhaps rightly) the average viewer wouldn't understand why the songs were in another language. Cloe wrote
