Thought I'd share this. Looks like both the dub fans and sub fans (to a lesser extent) are getting the shaft. Check out the just what TOKYOPOP is doing to Initial D: http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/alt_reviews/923.php

If this is the case, and I'm not too sure it is and won't be sure until September, then Tokyopop lied in their press release.

I knew it, I knew it!!! They butchered this series since day one. From the first name change in manga to this. This particularly pisses me off.
First of all, I love Initial D. Its music, story, characters and of course cars, make this series open to many people. But it is distinctly Japanese!!! That does not mean it cannot be widely accepted. But the next hobby I have is cars. Hell I have a REAL 1987 AE86 Corolla GTS TWINCAM! My Brother has a 1987 FC3S Turbo II RX7. These are real 16 year old pain in the ass cars to maintain. So now they hit my hobby of cars and anime at the same time!!! What bugs me is that this change is now moving it toward the wide spread "ricer" crowd which is what Tokyocrap is trying to target. I guess the original sounds of a 4AG engine were not "cool" enough. Believe me, My 4AG sounds better than any B series Honda Engine ever made! What I do not like is how they are trying to target the series in the US import scene vs its original Japanese racing theme. I like the Japanese racing theme alot more than our import scene full of ricers, posers and of course drag racers. (I know I am generalizing, and there are true tuners out there but for ever tuner, there is 10 ricers right behind them) I am just ranting now... And nothing I say or do will change Tokyocraps mind. Only poor sales of the Manga and DVD might change there mind. The problem is that all the ricers will embrace this series and try to become know-it-alls and will have no exposure to the original Japanese variation. But if you though a noob anime fan was tough, a ricer is even worse to correct. I seriously was hopping to HAVE a genuine unedited version. I could have cared less what they did on the dub as long as they kept the Japanese version intact. I would have bought it! Edit: Sorry, I assumed the changed the Japanese version (music edit etc.) From what the review said it was for the Tricked out version in the English dub. But again they still cheaply edited the subtitled version. I still won't buy it!!! |

Oh dear, this is troubling. Much worse then I thought. I kinda figured they might do some ab-libbing with the dub, but a total "we-want-to-be-ghetto" style? and I can imagine what else they might throw in the series (don't laugh, they just might do it): Cole: "I live my life a quater mile at a time." (or in this case, a mountain pass, but TP would probably mess that up too) K.T.: And one of the things wez knows is, its not how you stand by yo car, itz how yo race your car." Iggy: "ACT A FOOL!" And yes, folks not only will we have American NU-metal and Hip hop acts playing in the TO mode, but it will be BAD American NU-metal and Hip hop acts! Now, don't get me wrong I like NU-metal and Hip Hop, but not the bottom of the barrel kind, which from what I heard from the music video preview sounds very bad. troubling indeed Well, looks like I'm going to order the import DVD's (I dislike watching subtitles, but the "tricked-out" mode sounds PAINFULLY bad). And one final note, me and YF19 will get along just fine. |

Ok I just sent a letter to TokyoPop:
Subject "How did you manage to screw up on Initial D?" Hello. I have been watching and I have to ask, HOW? You had a great anime and you ruined it. In Initial D the races had drama, the characters had depth, and the engines sounded sweet... I had high hopes when you got it. Then when you started making deals with Radio Shack, and trying to get the game released here I thought "wow they are really taking a series this good seriously" Then the DVD came out. I must say I am supremly disapointed.... I hope your deal with Radioshack goes to hell and that game never gets released here. Now I am even hearing tell that you edited stuff out of the manga..... Congradulations Tokyo Pop.... You have taken A series I loved and made me want to stick my face in a woodchipper!!!! Now do us all a favor and redo the DVD right and release a public apology for this crap you have presented us with. |

I dunno. Sometimes fansubbers include foul language in their scripts to compensate for their awful understanding of Japanese. How do I know they were actually doing their job on Initial D, and Tokyopop wasn't closer to the literal translation?

GATSU: what? you mean Gohan and Goku don't swear like sailors? ;)
Aah E.Monsoon and AnimeLabs.. the pinacle of old school bad fansubbing.. either them or HECTO/Shinsengumi. :) |

*crys* I started watching the HKs of this show a few weeks ago and This is truly a great show. I can't believe that Tokyopop is screwing it up this bad. This makes Pioneers attempt at DBZ look like like perfection.

Well my initial D subs seem to be foul language free.
However, some of it is subbed from chinese.... Making some words lose their meaning. |

Well, I don't know about any of the digisubbers, but I know that Central Anime, who did the scripts used by most of the real fansub groups, is downright anal when it comes to accuracy of their scripts. Nor does Central use excessive foul language, often even keeping it out in cases where it might actually be appropriate. What I find ironic is that TP actually bought Central's scripts to use for the show and now, apparently, has thrown them out the window. After this review, I think I'll keep an eye out for some used LDs. It'd be cool to get the first box set which came with a remote control car. I imagine that's probably a bit expensive though. |

you do realize this is only the "tricked out version" they're releasing the original japanese version also.
