[EDIT: Added "spoiler warning" to the topic because I decided it would be easier than adding spoiler tags in several other posts. It's clear enough that this is an "ending discussion" thread anyway. ~Zalis]

I can't help but feel frustrated almost every time I end a show. spoiler[Why the hell do like 75% of anime series seem to have not-so-happy endings?]

Okay, I'm fine, it ended in a way that could be interpreted many ways spoiler[ including "continueing the dream" and returning to the real world] but I can't help but feel the same prick of irritation these endings always give me. spoiler[There is no reason the story writers had to end it the way they did. I dreaded throughout the series that such a thing would happen, and it did. Why do the script writers feel the need to make these "oh we'll always remember each other" endings with no real reason for them other than to make them? They could have easily played the cards differently but purposly made it so there was no way Saber could remain.

What frustrates me about these endings is they are almost always not either a tragic ending or a happy one. The whole "oh, we'll seperate them for the hell of it" drives me batty. Why can't any of these shows do it like Rah-Xephon did? Why does it always have to be the same stuff we had with Escaflowne? Am I missing some cultural plot thing, or am I just alone in this whole opinion that these endings leave me feeling cheated? ]

Hell, if they are gonna do it like this, they could least to do in a manner that doesn't leave the viewer irked, I'll use Stephen King's It for example, very dark story with a very, very well executed conclusion spoiler[ two of the seven are dead, Bev and Ben finally are together, and Bill is able to revive his wife from comatose via Silver. Even though they lose their childhood memories again, the ending does not leave the reader feeling like "well THAT sucks..."]

[With respects to the ending of FSN]spoiler[At least with this show they left it open to the viewer to conclude, honestly, I'd of been happy with just Saber standing at the door to his house like they did with the Elfen Lied anime. ]

What are you talking about? MOST anime have happy endings. As for Fate/Stay's ending, what's not-so happy about it? It's an example of Closure. The issues the characters had for that particular ending were basically settled.

An ending where Shirou and Saber live happily ever after would be cliche - and nonsensical. I've seen more series end on that note, than any other.

If you want more on Fate/Stay - look at the game endings as well.

They belong in two different time eras. This separation was supposed to happen.

Yeah sorry, but I think alot of your complaints are unfounded.

Firstly, Most Anime do end happily. There are many reasons the story writers had to (or at least should) end it the way they did. The old happily ever after would have been inaproproprite and cliche. It didn't suit the overall dark mood or the series. Also like KyuuA4 said, it wasnt like they just separate the two and thats the end, how sad... They do a great job of creating closure. Part of their relationship is coming to terms with there being no way for her to remain.

I'm also going to have to disagree and say it was a good ending on several levels. If you're looking for movies with a definite purpose and ending and moral, go check out Disney or any of the more western studios. Personally, one of the biggest draws towards anime for me is that I can never be entirely sure how things are going to end. Things may end happily, tragically, resolve only the most important key elements, resolve everything but the key element, or have no resolution at all... however, the ending is nearly always in line with the mood of the show, and it is in fewer (rather than more) anime that an ad hoc ending is tacked on to try and give it a happy ending.

Fate/Stay Night would have been terrible if they had tried to do such a thing. The entire show was a build up and explanation of the way things worked, to try and ignore all of that would undermine everything in the show, including the relationship between the two characters. Since the only reason to throw together an ad hox ending was so Saber and Shirou could be together, and them actually being together would undermine the entire show, it would have been nigh a travesty for them to try and force such a situation in my opinion.

wait i not sure but i think there is a chance that they can be in the same era.
in the king arther story doesn't it say the he (or she in this case) is sleeping, and will not awaken unless his (or her) people need him (or her.) so at the ending when she said that she was going to sleep once more it could be related to the story. right

thats right, i know my storys. Cool

I don't see how the ending is really sad. Maybe bittersweet at worst. As for most anime having "sad" endings, I agree with everyone else, I think its the other way around by a long shot.

While I had my issues with the show, I thought the ending itself was well done. I just would have preferred they followed one of the other scenarios. I only have a general idea of the direction the other two scenarios go, but I think the ending we got was the happiest of them. I don't know how either one ends, but I doubt UBW would have been a 'happier' ending and I can't see the Heaven's Feel scenario having anything resembling a 'happy' ending. I still dream of Heaven's Feel or Unlimited Blade Works being animated someday.

The ending for FSN is fitting. The themes explored throught the series manifested in the two main characters, and if it did not conclude the way it did, then the whole series would have no merit. The small monologue before the epilogue basically summed up why Shirou has chosen this outcome. This isn't a great ending, but it's a very good one, and probably the only one that would fit the mood of the series.

I just finished the series this evening, and checked back at this post. Idk, I can see the frustration...it was bit sad (though for some reason, I didn't shed any tears), but I guess I know that these endings are common for visual novel anime and for other types as well. I'd name them, but they'd be automatic spoilers. At any rate, it was an ending that fit the tone of the series and where the character arcs were going, so it wasn't bad by my account...I'd heard a lot of expectation-lowering things about FSN, like that it only animated one part of the overal game scenario, or one game out of three, or something like that. So I was expecting a worse or less complete ending than the one I got. What can I say, I'm the apprentice of low expectations.

I agree with the common responses here that most anime DON'T end sad. And I agree that sad animes are very sad, but they are refreshing and different. To me they don't suddenly ruin a series that you have enjoyed up until the very end, when you suddenly learned it ended sad, but rather make the series more memorable and fulfilling overall (even though you might feel sad).

I personally get more annoyed when animes end inconsistently or in a way that is confusing. Sometimes these animes are sad endings too, and that is pretty bad when it happens. But I think Fate/Stay Night ends well. I haven't seen past the official release of DVD 3, but I have a rough idea of what happens and I played the game, although I couldn't read anything since it was in Japanese.

BTW, I think you will be even more sad if I tell you that from what I've seen (which may be incorrect), the more accepted interpretation of the ending by people who really study the series, game, etc in detail is the one you fear, i.e. the "sad" interpretation and not the "hopeful" one.

On the other hand maybe you will feel happier since in the game you can choose completely different paths and not all of them end sad at all. Also supposedly the Fate/Stay Night manga which I've never seen but is coming out in Japan is gonna follow the path that is not sad.

But I should mention one last thing, the game and anime don't necessarily have to be taken to be related (this is one criticism I often have for the true Fate/Stay and Tsukihime TYPE-MOON fanatics). As a more casual fan, I think it is fine to ignore the games and take the anime alone for what it is. And since I haven't seen the anime to completion yet, I can't say what my own "interpretation" of the ANIME version of the ending would be...

Which is precisely why I don't like how the anime tried as hard as it could to adhere as close as it could to one narrow view of the original game. I don't like it when studios adapting visual novels to anime form try to make a literal adaptation that ties closely with the original game, because it almost always means they're only adapting one possible path out of maybe a dozen or more, and as a result are always excluding some important piece of the puzzle that leaves the anime feeling incomplete.

And for something like Fate, where Archer's identity and Sakura's family are vitally important elements, that becomes a pretty big problem.

I go into more detail here, but as a devoted Type-Moon fan, I'd've greatly prefer that they hadn't closely adapt the game to anime, and had instead done some hybrid of all the paths that hit on the important high points of each one. It'd be very different from the source, but it would've ultimately been more faithful in giving anime viewers unfamiliar with said source a good view of the whole picture.

The game had three different "scenarios": Fate, Heaven's Feel, and Unlimited Blade Works.

I believe Fate was effectively the default path and the one that people were expected to see first in the game. It focused on Saber and laid the groundwork for the other two scenarios.

Unlimited Blade Works focused on Archer. Archer's identity was only vaguely hinted at in the anime, but this scenario goes into his identity and his real goals. It also apparently involves Shirou developing his powers and becoming a badass.

Heaven's Feel focuses on Rin. The anime vaguely implied her relationship with Sakura and this scenario goes into that. It reveals that spoiler[Sakura was Rider's true master but for some reason the family made Shinji become the Master instead (that's why he needed the book). It also involves Sakura becoming evil and making Saber her second servant or something. Apparently a lot of people die in this scneario]

I made sure I was unfamiliar with the game stuff before watching the series and only learned of these things afterwards, though I did know that one of the scenarios had spoiler[Dark Saber].

I'm afraid I have to agree about the ending while it's not what I'd call ideal as the spoiler[romance didn't work out which is tragic, Saber was already dead from series start and the only way to make her alive again would be to use the grail and kill a bunch of innocent people again.] Which of course would go against both of their principles, so rather than perform character assassination I'm glad they stuck with the established development so far and I liked it, despite it being bittersweet. Besides he still has Rin and they had some chemistry too.

Yeah there is always Rin..heh she personally looked hotter than Saber.

I thought that the ending was pretty logical even though it was sad, like everyone else said she was already dead from the start and using the Holy Grail for a selfish cause would be against what they believe in. I think it ended great...though if they did use the Holy Grail to bring Saber to his time that would have deffinatly caught me off guard. Wink
