Ever noticed that there are alot of majoriety of a few rare unknown Anime dubs that we barely know of here in the U.S, like for example,back in the late 80's and mid 90's,there were quite a few rare barely known anime dubs released on VHS with in america with horrible americanized boxart which looks nothing like the actual anime.
Like this one for instance, a couple of years ago, I bought a VHS video of a rare Anime dub called The Magical Princess Gigi which in reality is actually a dubbed version of one of the 1980's Minky Momo OVA's with a completely altered plot. basically,The Magical Princess Gigi was a very cheesy dub version of the Mahou no Princess Minky Momo OVAs La Ronde in my Dream dubbed by Harmony Gold, the same people who did Robotech, and Reba West who did Minmei in Robotech did Minky Momo's voice in that dub.. anyone else discovered any rare anime dubs like this? |

I know what you're talking about, if I recall there was an awful version of Nausicaa released a long time ago that basically butchered the story. It really goes to demonstrate though that despite all the complaints about dubs they really have come a long ways since back then. Sure there's still bad apples out there but dubbing in anime has moved ahead by leaps and bounds since those early VHS releases.

.  yeah, I remember that awful version of Nausicaa known as Warriors of the wind dubbed by New World Pictures/Orion Pictures,and yes,it was indeed horrid. thank god Miyazaki strict to his "No edit" rule.

I like to prowl the Dollar DVD bins at Wal-mart and such for old, unknown anime in bad-chopped-up-dubbed form. There's quite a bit there if you know how to spot it. (Be warned tho', the ones that look the most like anime are actually bad Korean knock-off shows. Like, REALLY bad.
 )

I actually bought the Warriors of the Wind tape from eBay because I had heard so much about how bad it was and I wanted to see for myself. And it so is!! They didn't pull a 4Kids and took out all the violence, they took out things they thought kids would be bored with. Unfortunately some of that was backstory of Nausicaa. Oh, also: The dub sucks. On so many levels. They changed names (Nausicaa = Zandra) and mispronounced names they didn't change (Yupa: pronounced Yu-pah, they called him Yup-uh). And the voices sucked anyhow. Sorry about that little rant there...I just needed to get that out. |

I actually didn't mind the dub *that* much, it was more the fact that they chopped what, a half hour out of the movie? The first time I saw it, I was following along and enjoying it even though I knew it was edited, but then all of a sudden I had no idea whatsoever what the hell was going on. And then it was over.
I actually picked up 3 DVDs from WalMart's dollar bin a few weeks ago: Kimba the White Lion (which actually has Osamu Tezuka's name on it...that surprised me), Space Transformers (haven't watched this yet), and *cough* Raider of Galaxy. I can't tell if that last one is a knock-off or a legit anime....the main robot in it is called "Mazinga" which could be a dub butchering of "Mazinger" as in Go Nagai's Mazinger Z, and the robot looks a lot like Mazinger but not quite. It could be a sequel of some sort, or a blatant knockoff, but I don't know enough about the series to say either way. I will say the credits (what little there are) only list English names and the dub is downright painful to listen to....the main MALE hero is played by a woman. Not a female voice actor trying to sound like a young boy, but an actual woman playing the role as if it was a woman even though it's obviously not. SO horrible. |

Warriors of the Wind was my first exposure to Nausicaa and I didn't realize it was anime until much later. As such, I really didn't mind the dub (at the time at least) nor did I have any problem with the edits since I didn't know they happened. It made sense, or at least any plot holes that resulted were not noticed by my 8 year old self.
I still have the tape sitting on top of one of my DVD shelves. Aside from myself and haruhifan1200, does anyone else own the tape? |

You know,if I recall Corrently, I beleive there were some rare Dubs of Photon Red Zillion back in the day dubbed by Streamline Pictures released on VHS, but than they shortly dropped the licensed altogether only after a few episodes.

Space Transformers and Raider of Galaxy are part of the Korean knock-off set. Pretty bad, aren't they? I know I posted a thread about a couple I bought a good while ago and there was a pretty informative link in there. I'll look it up later. (edit: Got it- http://news.toonzone.net/article.php?ID=9474) What I've found so far is as follows: 2 volumes of Kimba Huck and Tom's Mississippi Adventure Thumbelina The Wonderful Galaxy of Oz The World of Hans Christian Anderson I've only actually watched 1 episode of Kimba and the Thumbelina movie (surprisngly solid for a butch-dub.) Actually, I've been dissapointed becuase there haven't been any new titles recently. I know Miyazaki's Puss in Boots is out in a dollar DVD, maybe I should hunt that down... |

My walmart sells Dvds of Old Rare anime dubs for 1 dollar cheap like that Puss N boots Dub you mentioned,so yeah,my Walmart has it,I'm pretty sure some Walmarts have it. 
also,as for the Dreaded Warriors of the Wind dub,yeah,because it was so bad and butchered over an hour of the entire Original Nausicaa story,Miyazaki wanted it whiped clean off the face of the earth and wanted people to pretend it never existed. which is why Disney redubbed it uncut. |

Do you mean this Zillion? Streamline released 5 episodes on their one-episode-per-tape "video comics" line, plus the OAV sequel "Zillion: Burning Night." The latter was actually one of the first "real" anime I ever saw....brings back memories.

I bought the german tape of "warriors of the Wind" a decade ago. In german it has the subtitle "Die Sternenkrieger" which roughly means "Star warriors". I kid you not. |

This dub is actually quite recent, infact, it's currently airing of Canada's YTV, it's none other than Battle B Daman: Fire Spirits, a show which isn't all that great in it's best, but this dub just kills any potential. This show has a completely new voice cast from the first season, none are proper match ups to the original voice actors, and none seem to know how to act very well. Heck the ADR studio that dubbed this didn't even sync the dialogue to the mouth flaps properly, as you have voice before flaps, and voice after flaps. Just terrible, and it's from a studio I've never heard of "Etcetera Group", good luck searching that up. And none of the voice actors listed in the credits ring a bell, I'll search in the Encyclopedia, but I doubt I'll get a positive result.
