Hey, I'm new to the ANN forums. I was wondering about peoples' opinions about Oh My Goddess, as I'm considering buying it. Good, bad? Feedback is appreciated.

Anime or manga?
Anime is good, but short.
The manga is great, but make sure you get the newer versions of the first few books. The original releases were edited to make it hard to follow.

To be honest the manga is wonderful, the OAV is good, and the movie is not bad.
All of them are very sweet in a good, makes all but the most cynical and pretentious smile, sort of way. That is really the heart of the series. Considering that the average fan is somewhat jaded, that is quite an accomplishment. Wink

Cool

The OVA's and the movie are great.

But if you want more the manga is good too. Lots more character development.

The OAV is too short, would be better if it was longer coulda been least 12 episodes but oh well. The dub and animation is good IMO.

Cant comment on the manga.

I'm more of a fan of Ah My Mini Goddess nowadays than the others. (Although the oavs are better than the movie, which was just an exercise in redundancy.)

Thanks, I want to go buy the anime first, then I think I'll hunt down the manga in Japanese.

I can't say anything about the OMG manga, as I have not read any of it. BUT I have seen the OAV subbed, and LOVED it! I give it a perfect 10 out of 10!

I've given my opinion numerous times, but I think the OVAs are lovely to look at and they're cute enough on their own merits, but they're completely shallow in terms of characterizations and character development compared to the manga source material. The movie was a touch better, but, after a seven year hiatus, they wasted too much screen time on two characters not from the manga instead of giving us what I would think would be the obvious OMG! movie with Mara/Marller/Marla doing mischevous things to attempt to get Keiichi and Belldandy to break up but failing miserably in humourous ways until she unleashes some sort of evil demon or force which she can't control and she's forced to work together with the goddesses to defeat it. The "Queen Sayoko" story would have made an ideal film. Also, there was too much apocalyptic stuff happening and not enough "little" slice-of-life scenes like in the manga. Well, at least we got to see Peorth animated.

Mark me down as another person whom actually prefers Adventures of the Mini-Goddess to any animated Oh My Goddess, since the slapstick style of humour reminds me vaguely of the Looney Tunes shorts.

I agree with Tenchi on several points here. I believe the OVA was pretty poorly done overall in terms of everything except some brilliant artwork and animation. It’s not that you can’t enjoy the series, it’s just that after reading the manga it seems to lack so many of the things that make the manga great.

I was more satisfied with the feature length movie (in just about every way). I thought that the new material (including characters) was a welcome and refreshing change of pace from the manga. In fact, I would say that the movie’s story would have made a good story in the manga as well.

To really get the most out of this series though you really ought to read the manga. It is, by far and away, the very best that I’ve ever seen.

Message Ends,
Saxton

Yeah, watch the OAVs first because the manga is better. It'll be more like the manga elaborates on the story of the OAV than the OAV left so much out. That's how I watched it and I enjoyed the OAV very much the first time.

The anime is ok. But i was one of the people who started to read the manga first and then watch the anime. Because of this, it was obvious how much was left out of the anime. You see many of the characters from the manga in the intro/ending song animation, but they aren't in the anime itself. Just the few basic characters are in the anime.

But as everyone else says, the manga is very good even though it is a little expensive (about $15 to $20+). I'm dying for the 17th volume to be released (comes out soon). As soon as it's out, i'm buying it. Anime smile

I don't understand why you all have such bad things to say about the movie! It was quite obviously fanservice, in the more innocent meaning of the term. Just meant to show the characters interacting, something like a little manga vignette. I'm willing to excuse its lack of character depth because the animation and the interaction between Keiichi and Belldandy was so utterly cute...

The OAV was a bit more flat, character-wise, than the manga series really allowed for... But I love the manga more than either of them... Which reminds me to bother my friend that lost my manga to buy me a new copy.... Hmmmm...
