I know this will sound stupid, but I should be going to the Next Ohayocon in Jan. and it will be my first con. Will people think I'm weird if I just chillax and have a good time, or do I have to get up and sing anime themes or something, because i can't carry a tune.

Don't worry about it too much. Just be yourself, as well as using some common sense, and you'll do fine. I found this thread over on Anime on DVD shortly before I went to my first con, and found it to be quite useful.

I only started going to cons this july, and so far I went to everyone since then. Going to cons is really fun - I like watching cosplayers do their thing, and I made new friends through cons too.

This has some very useful tips for preparation for oneself, but I'm not sure it directly answers the OP's question - will people be upset if I'm not a freak like them?

In all honesty, I would say that if you aren't calling attention to yourself, people won't be upset. There's usually a multitude of events and things to do at a convention. After you check in for con registration, go and look over the program and find the events that interest you. I'm the type of guy that loves to go to panels, guest and industry events, the dealer's room, and pop in a video room or two. Things like cosplay, video games, AMVs, etc interest me fairly little. I might wind up in a karaoke room if I've had enough to drink and have a CD on me, but like you, I'm a horrible singer, too.

There's all sorts of attendees at conventions and if you find events that interest you, then you can find people who might have similar interests or personalities and those are some of the best events of the con.

Don't worry if you're not a "freak like them," even people dressed like "normals" are completely welcomed by con attendees if they are, in fact, a fan. I never do cosplay and haven't done any karaoke yet...I generally spend my time at cons going to interesting panels (guest panels, industry rep panels, and panels put on by "Random Anime Fan #3374" about good topics - these people usually have a heavy passion for something and will make a good panel out of it), checking out the AMV contest if there isn't a huge line for it, shopping in the Dealers' Room and chatting with buyers and sellers there, going to video rooms to see things I haven't seen before (or things I have seen before if I want to see them with an audience), and tossing back a few drinks at the hotel bar. (And in my room, various room parties, video rooms late at night, and outdoor patios out of eyesight of authorities, i.e. the rear plaza of the Mariott at AnimeIowa 2007 Wink) And I really do like the minor panels where people just get together to chat and review/discuss/insult anime. I'm sure I'll be running a panel like that at NebrasKon again this year.

Bottom line is, there are plenty of interesting things to do, they just get obscured by these mega-popular "out there" events. I never even bother going to cosplay/Masquerade events -- too much waiting to get in, just to watch a bunch of lame skits, especially when I can covertly gawk at hot girls in costume in the halls easily enough. (Too bad most of these girls are below the "younger than my sister" age cutoff point.)

Thanks, and the thread that jetz left was awesome! But as Zalis116 said, are the cosplay events worth going to. I'm the kind of guy that can get embarassed by someone else's screw-ups, so I might feel bad if someone sucks at what they're doing.

what thread? I think you meant NGE1113 Very Happy

After reading Zalis116's post, I'm officially jealous. Cons in the Philippines aren't as good. Fun, but not as good. In the three cons I went to this year (my first three cons) I just watched the cosplay competition, made friends, and felt tired. Fun, but tired.

As Zalis said you don't really need to dress up or "participate" in anything to go. No one will look down on you. Majority of people who do go are the normal casual fans. For every cosplayer you've got 4 people dressed normally. I've been to many cons and my only cosplay gear is my usual Hawaiian shirts lol. I did dress up one day at one con once. More or less because the extra clothes I brought worked as the outfit lol. I have not and will never perfom karokee though, I know I suck despite many years of choir.

When I go to panels though I see the "normal" con-goers enjoying and asking just as many questions as the cosplayers do. The con as I see it is supposed to be for anime fans. And anime fans come in all shapes, sizes, colors, genders, and forms of dress. Just a nice place to go and share your hobby and maybe gain some new knowledge from a panel or get some cool items from the Dealer's Room and Artist Alley.

As a first time con-goer I do have some tips for you. First, eat properly. Do not skimp on meals especially for a full 3+ day con. You'll regret it. Try and bring some healthy snacks, like granola bars, with you to keep your energy up. bringing your own food (which means sneaking it in with a backpack or bag) is a good idea. Most convention centers will rape your wallet for food and limit what other non convention center places can sell, if anything. Get proper sleep or you'll have no energy. Third, try and experience a little of everything. it's your first time, have fun and see a little of everything if ya can. be prepared though for a long line to go to the Dealer's Room. At any con this place gets soooo many people it's crazy. So best to wait til it's been open for an hour or so before going. The line for it will start hours before it opens. Also, I hope you're not claustrophobic. It can get kind tight at times.

I went to a couple of Masquerades when I first started going to cons, but the quality of the skits were so poor (poor acting, mics not working, out of synch with the pretaped lines, overly bad staticky music), that I just stopped. I can see plenty of excellent cosplayers just wandering the halls and the dealers' room.

One thing that I don't mind waiting in line for is the AMV contests. Those can be great fun.

Re: cosplaying, karaoking yourself: Do what you want! It's up to you what you want to do, what you want to see, etc. My friends and I cosplay, but not every day. For a four day con, we'll probably cosplay two of the days, and then wander around "normally" the other two. We hit the dealers' room, go watch some fansubs, sit in some industry panels. When we get tired of anime, we relax in the hotel room, or go catch a regular movie.

Oh, yeah, and re: attending cons: please shower. Common sense, but there are a horrifying amount of people who don't think so.

AMV? I'm sure I know what it is, but not the acronym for it. And thanks to NGE1113 for the thread. Not jetz.

Anime music videos. Music videos done with anime, either one specific one, or various. Some of them can be really well done.

Oh. Do they play them on a bunch of TV's or slap them on the wall with a projector?

I just attended my first con, Manifest in Melbourne, Australia, this past weekend. I was a little nervous myself, especially as I was cosplaying as well, but I have found you can do whatever you want at a con, you can chill, enter comps, watch screenings, whatever you like.

I had a blast, I hope you did as well. Very Happy

I might be going to my first anime convention in April. It's call AniZona, and I read that it takes place on Easter weekend in Phoenix, AZ, so hopefully I can go to that, which will be my first con. I'm kind of nervous, I've never been to one before, and I kind of don't know what to expect.
