THE POPULATION GROWTH OF ANIME
I really noticed over my Saturday how popular anime and manga is getting. I was at Borders Bookstore for about an hour and a half today and noticed a boy and girl about 13-14 who spent most of the hour at the Manga section reading mangas. They seemed very interested in Tenchi Muyo. Both also had over 3-5 mangas piled up ready to read. I scanned through Vol. 2 of Lupin the Third and Vol. 1 of Dragon Hunter. I also noticed a young girl who bought one of the last Trigun Mangas on the shelf. The Anime in the dvd section also looked like it had been selling well. One dvd was left of "Witch Hunter Robin: Vol 1." and "Trigun" I later stopped over at the mall and noticed about 6 japanese people swarming the new Initial D Arcade game so i couldn't play. I stopped into Suncoast and noticed some girls looking over the anime. I found a boxset of Dual! and looked over the many Lupin dvds. In the back of the room i browsed through the T-shirts and saw Trigun, Cowboy beebop, and Rurouni Kenshin apparel and almost fell over when i found 2 Inuyasha Shirts! one was red with a picture of Kagome and Inuyasha on it and the other was a long sleeved black shirt with a very impressive picture of all the Inuyasha characters on the back. I bought the red one right away. They also had a black t-shirt with the words "Anime Freak" on it. Which i first saw at www.animenation.com My day was great and i hope to see more anime fans soon. |

It's definitely a good thing that we have greater acess to anime; but even with that being said, there are many people that dismiss it. Whenever I go to Borders or Barnes and Nobles etc. , I'm usually the only person (in a very crowded store) who even gives the manga and anime sections a second look. But, I do agree; I'm glad that the world of anime is growing. Hopefully, the younger kids with the DBZ t-shirts and Sailor Moon back packs (and there's absolutely nothing wrong with DBZ or Sailor Moon) will grow up and find that there is a lot going on beyond the borders of saturday morning anime shows.

Whenever I look at manga in Borders, I have to elbow my way past the people browsing the comics section, and I'm the only one looking at manga. Everyone else is looking at Spider-Man or one of the many other superhero comics they put on the shelves.
