Well, I just got back from my trip to Baltimore. I was out there for a Wahammer convention, "Games Day". (anyone here play?) I used to be a guru at that game (the 40,000 equivelent) but I don't play it much anymore. My family wanted to make the trip. It was cool, but I want to go to an anime convention more.
Anyways, I way playing their big mega battle event, and I look up from the table, and this guy says to me "I like your shirt" (I was wearing a Rurouni Kenshin shirt) and I realize that I am surrounded by a bunch of guys wearing anime club shirts. We oraganized and led a brigade and crushed the undwitted foe. Glory to Otakudom!! Are the two communities that closely related? I mean, almost everywhere I shop for DVDs, comics, trading cards and miniature games are sold there too. I can't imagine a anime-only shop (although that may be an ambition for the future  )
Which brings me to my ultimate question. ARE THERE ANY CONS out in the New England area or the Pacific states near it? The Baltimore convention center was huge, and I can picture an anime con in there. I will go crazy if I get to Games Day 2002 but not an anime con! |

Oh, I forgot to mention the multitude of very, very drunk baseball fans in Baltimore. These people couldn't even see cars coming right for them! There was one group of Phillies fans (I'm not a baseball fan, BTW) who ran around in the street yelling about their childhood.
They were very entertaining, but I think people could afford to be a little more responsible. |

And I'm working on starting an anime convention in the Philadelphia area for next year. I hope this answers your question

Yeah, it seems like most people who like anime like video games and/or games like warhammer. I used to play Warhammer until I decided I couldn't afford to buy both anime and Warhammer so I gave it up. |

The comic, gaming & Anime / Manga industries have always shared many fans.
As well as Sci-fi (in fact, many sci-fi conventions used to host an Anime section, but with Anime Cons now coming to their own glory that happens less frequently), RPG and computer gaming. Most large cities will have several "gaming stores" that carry comics, anime, sci-fi and games. |

Yeah, I know, Cgoten. If I never played Warhammer then Games Workshop's stocks would have dropped thousands. Actually, I have a hard time beating my brother in Warhammer, so I am not as ardent about pouring money, and more importantly, my time and art painting them. I lost the Golden Demon painting competion, BTW. Feel free to offer words of consolance  I'm only kidding, it didn't bother me that much.
I had worked really hard on the model, though. I had converted it to look really special. Almost all the finalists painted Space Marines. Still it was a good trip, but not the heart of my ambitions. I'm better at fanart, IMHO, anyway.

To add insult to injury, I JUST GOT BACK FROM THE FRIGGIN (insert explative here) BALTIMORE CONVENTION CENTER!!
On top of that, all the New York cons are taking place during late August-September. And then I have school 
I also kinda doubt I'll make it there for fear that my father may be frightened by being within a four mile radius of fat bearded Sailor Scouts ( I for one, sure am. Meaning no offense to such people, to each his/her own) Maybe I can endure another six hour drive back to MD. I doubt anyone else in my family could though. Guess I'll just have to strap into the giant robot I have hidden in my secret laboratory and bust it out of the underground hangar. The front yard isn't what it used to be anyway. (j/k)

I hate when I can't go to cons just because of my family. I was gonna go to AX but my brother is on some week long camping trip so now I can't go cause he can't come so my whole family doesn't wanna go anywhere without him. Maybe next year....

Although my situation isn't quite the same as yours, I know exactly how you feel. In about three weeks, I will be leaving for a 2-week vacation with my family in California. We will be spending a good part of the two weeks in the San Diego area, and we are scheduled to leave for home on August 1 - the day Comic Con starts. I've never been to a con before, and this could have potentially been a big thing for me. However, the destination was chosen in such a rush that I didn't have time to consider anything like this before our plane tickets were booked, and it's pretty much impossible at this point to extend the trip and try and fit it in. (Assuming that my parents put up with an extended stay for something like a convention...) I am somewhat less than happy with the whole matter.

I personally think anime conventions are one of the best ways to further the developement of anime in America. The main reason I feel that way is because a lot of the communities out there as a whole have no real awareness of anime period. Anime Conventions get into cities and year after year more or less bring anime in by force. Process takes time, and only works in one city at a time, but eventually these same cities also start to develope more and more shops that sell anime and the process continues from there on.
I personally really value anime conventions worth because I'm involved with one first hand. Working on the committee to put together something as big as a convention is a lot of hardwork, but when that day comes and you see all the people coming in it's a feeling I won't ever forget. It particularly means a lot to me because I'm in Nashville Tennessee and there is NO anime convention here outside of ours with the closest one being AWA in Atlanta. The entire state of Tennessee is somewhat of a deadzone of anime, but we're hoping to fix that one of these days. |

I totally agree with you. Even people who have little to no interest in anime can attend such conventions and maybe find a hobby they might like.
You hard work is appreciated.
Yeah I know what you're feeling. I live in Connecticut, and the closest I get to anime is in comic shops a half an hour away from my town, or big electronics or music stores (which I hate because they don't particularly stock a good percentage) There are no cons in CT, and if I had the resources to build one I probably would. (I am considerably younger than just about EVERYONE on this forum) The closest I can get to a con is AX in NY. If I go for one day, I might be able to make it there. ^_^ |

I live in Illinois and I don't have any trouble finding anime. Besides, if you can't find something you can always get it online. I went to ACen this year cause it's not to far away from where I live.

I live near Boston. Anime has never been a secret here due to all the local colleges. A store was finally set up in Harvard Sq. and I'm happy to say that it has flourished in recent years.
Boston's first true anime convention will hit next April, and it's long overdue, but that doesn't mean anime hasn't made its presence known in conventions. That's due to the fact that the local non-anime conventions have been inundated with anime fans (that were there to do different things). They spoke up and they got anime wings. Vericon has had an anime wing since they started. Arisia held their first one last year, and if Boskone doesn't have one yet I think it will soon. Those conventions happen every year. Vericon is a game convention, Arisia is a fantasy convention, and Boskone is a sci-fi convention. I was very happy when Arisia opened an anime wing. I was extremely happy at the turnout that received. I didn't think it was going to be that big, but I have to admit they had an excellent line-up. Vericon had anime from the start, but it doesn't do too well. That is largely in part due to the fact that it's a game convention, and everyone is playing games. Still, I sneak in whenever the schedule allows (and do my best to clear the schedule for the AMV contest). I haven't been to Boskone so I'm not sure what they have. I haven't heard of an anime wing there yet, but I think they'll get one soon. If you can't have a big one, you can always try to get into a smaller one. If enough people call for it they'll start it up just to get people through the door. |

Yes indeed,both are closely linked (gaming and anime community).
For example,RPG video games,characters in them tend to be kind of "anime-esque" or at least used to be and as of recent years have had animated sequences in them too (Wild Arms,Xenogears,etc).And there were some older games I remember for the Sega CD,though imported I think, definitely had the feel of an (interactive) anime now that I think of it. And popular anime series are often made into a game (or series of games).Both benefit and to some extent support each other I suppose.. I got into anime because,a friend who I met though video games,got/was into anime and thus introduced me to anime. See how that worked,games led to an interest in things Japanese to him I suppose (he played lots of imported games so chances are he played anime related games ex. Doraemon,etc),which led him to anime.And gaming led us to meeting each other and becoming friends,he decided to share anime with me..So many years later (between the earlier experiances thanks to him and gaming) I started watching it more finally. n_n Interesting,non? n_n I could probably make more sense if I had some sleep,but oh well.. n_n;; I've never played Warhammer.. n_n;; I'm probably missing out on something good..ah well.. And as for cons..I've never been to one (anime or otherwise),however I will (hopefully $_$) be attending Otakon this year (18 days till then and counting I think). n_n I have a nice 16hr (I think) bus ride to look forward too..yay.
