I went to see "Master and Commander" today, (a must-see) and saw a preview of an upcoming movie called "The Last Samurai," starring Tom Cruise. From what I gathered, it is about an American officer enlisted to help train a Japanese faction in a war. Does anyone know if it is based on actual history? Also, are there any anime/manga related to it and/or the war *if* it is based on?

American samurai movies are usually quite @#!@, But this might turn out good. It will probably be based before the meiji era [1863] or in the middle of fedural times [1500-1700]

If you go here I think it mentions something how Edward Zwick was inspired by the Meiji Restoration. Read through the Production Notes.

It is indeed based on the Meiji Era. Tom Cruise plays a Civil War officer sent to American to train Emperor Meiji's forces in firearm use. However, he ends up being captured by, and joining sides with, a clan of samurai instead.

This film looks like it might actually be good (I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise, admittedly, since most of the roles I've seen him in have been on the bad end of things), but I'm not going to get my hopes up in case it turns out to be an "epic flop" like Gods & Generals.

I wonder if the Shinsengumi will have any part in it. Hey, I can dream, can't I? Embarassed Well...until the film comes out and we know for sure, that is...

Hmm...I don't think there are any anime/manga related to this movie...aside from your samurai anime/manga already out there. But then again I haven't looked it up. Cool
It looks pretty good and I want to see it! Smile

That would be great.
Hajime Saito (actually Fujita Goro) appears and attacks Tom Cruise. They will have a Kenshin-like fight (without not killing your opponent.)

Choosing Samurai Cruise over Return of the King is a crime punishable by death....

To the little information I know about the movie, I would hazard that it might be loosely based on the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877. Basically, the samurai class didn't like the idea of losing their superiority and took it to the government forces....

Look it up in your history books....

edit for spellin'

Well, and this is only rumour, but I heard that ALL of the scenes involving Saruman were axed from Return of the King. Given how important of a character he really is, if this is true, then I have a BAD feeling about this film (not to mention something I heard about an actual duel between Aragorn & Sauron...).

Yea and it seems he was pretty bitter about it too. His scenes will be in the DVD though. It's said that Peter Jackson wanted to keep close to the book, and Saruman doesn't play much part in the third book. Gotta finish reading it!
It should be really good though! If your bum will last for 3 and a half hours. Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop

By the way, sorry this is off topic!

Risking Off-Topicness here, they never got all the way through the events of the Two Towers book in the film version, and Saruman DID have a very crucial scene at the end of that which was supposed to be in the Return of the King film.

spoiler[The scene I'm referring to is where Gandalf & Company corner Saruman in the Tower of Orthanc, and Gandalf essentially dethrones Saruman. Wormtongue, in a rage, throws the Palantír at the Fellowship members, and Gandalf is forced to ride to Minas Tirith with it & Pippin after Pippin accidentally betrays their location to Sauron by gazing into it.]

I think the movie should end with the death of Cruise by Saito. BTW, rottentomatos says it is the Satsuma rebellion.

Sounds about right, though the cast list at IMDB.com didn't have any historical figures from that incident that I recognized.
