They were 11 has finally come out on DVD.
However, before i buy it i want to know wether someone who has bought it can tell me what format it is in.
Is it Widescreen or 4:3? If widescreen, is it anamorphic?
Does anyone know what the original aspect ratio is?
I don't like my movies cropped.
Thank you.

The release is 4:3, but it didn't look cropped to me. Many anime movies were apparently animated in 4:3 and then had the top and bottom masked when shown in theaters.

Anyway, do you know this, or is it something you just heard from a friend?

I don't have any info on the DVD-just want to say that the manga (collected by Viz in Four Shojo Stories) is well worth reading. The story's pretty much the same as the anime, but the style is much more-well, more shojo. The anime has a more straightforward visual style.

While I can't say for certain with They Were 11, it certainly is true.
Project A-Ko is one of the more famous examples, which was released "widescreen", and through hard work was FINALLY restored to "full screen". It took fans a while to grasp that the thing was originally animated in full-frame, and cropped down to widescreen, instead of the other way around.
There's plenty of other anime movies that are animated in 4:3 as well. It wouldn't surprise me if They Were 11 was another 4:3 movie.
