I've been noticed that a lot of the more experienced anime fans meaning in the fan likeing anime for about 10-20 years. These groups don't seem to like a lot of the new anime thats coming on Cartoon Network and such. So Doyou think being a more experienced anime fan makes them more particular on the anime that they'd like?

What do you mean by "don't seem to like a lot of things that our coming on American tv?" Do you mean live action sitcoms and reality TV, or dubbed, edited anime that's shown on channels like Cartoon Network, The Anime Network, etc.? I for one don't really care for all of the "normal" programming on all those other channels. I occasionaly watch ESPN, the Simpsons, and probably Friends, Fraiser, or Everybody Loves Raymond. But aside from those shows, I can't stand "reality TV" or whatever else they have. I guess the news would be OK, but it's usually about issues that don't really affect me anyway, plus it's kind of depressing when they talk about someone getting killed. If you're talking about anime on national TV, I think a lot of us explained this on that one thread a long time ago about "are you tired of seeing anime on U.S. TV" or something like that. And as for the question of whether experience affects the anime you prefer, I don't think it does. I think it all really just depends on your own personal preferences. If you like a certain kind of element in an anime, then you'll probably like it in another show (given that it's presented well.) For instance, I liked Inuyasha a little more because the music is done by Kaoru Wada, who also did the music for Ninja Scroll the movie. In the 10 or 11 years I've watched anime, I don't really have a series I prefer based on "experience" alone. It's usually the case in where if I see something I like, I like it. Otherwise, I just move on. So, no. I don't think "experience" really makes a fan more particular to certain anime, unless it was well presented in succession or something like that. |

Well i pretty much explained why i prefer anime over the stuff that is aired in the U.S. (And man did i open a can of worms.lol) Although i have a 10 or so years of watching anime, I basically have my favorite genres which may or may not be of someone's else interest. But i can suggest a few reccomendations based on my experience as an otaku. If your'e into comedy , check out Goldenboy. Action oriented horror; Well there's Vampire hunter D bloodlust,Hellsing,Wicked City,Witch hunter robin,Twiglight of the dark master and Devilman.(which will soon premiere as a live action movie..at least in Japan.) Superheroesque stuff; I personally love the 1994 remake of Gatchaman. Hurricane Polymar was fun to watch as long as you can suspend your disbelief. 8 man after couldv'e been much better if not for a semi lame plot and terrible english voice acting. ( I.E.worst impersonation of a black kid ever.) Sadamitsu falls in between sci-fi and superhero stuff. same goes for Bio booster armor Guyver. Comedy with a blend of action? Go nagai's Cutey Honey,Burn up W or Generator Gawl sounds ok to me. Martial arts stuff like Ninja Scroll, (the movie, not the disapointing TV series.)Samurai X,Samurai deeper KYO are cool And of course, what would anime be without SCI-FI/Mecha? Escaflowne,Evangelion,Detonator orgun,Gundam 0800 and endless waltz,Robotech (yes i admit to liking Mecek's "bastardization of the three unrelated anime series) Farewell yamato,Heat guy J,Gunparade march (it's like the hyped blue gender, but much better IMHO) Argentosoma had me trippin' and the SEMI Underated Soultaker. (Hence the namesake.) just to name a few. These are but some of the stuff i like and maybe others will too. Remember it's whatever moves ya.

This is all moot for me in that I can't watch CN in Canada, but, I think the simplest answer is that the people who started watching anime at least ten years back are now well out of their teens, so they've just outgrown the more fan service-y or violent (violence for the sake of itself) anime that teenage guys might find "kewl", and they've seen so much by now that they're fairly jaded and it takes a lot to impress them.
As a 29-year old who first started renting anime on a regular basis (meaning "things besides Akira") and buying manga ten years ago this spring (and joined an anime club ten years ago this late summer), I can attest to the fact that I am somewhat jaded by a lot of the anime that get the most buzz (at least when I get the chance to rent them), and I prefer the more niche, by fandom standards, titles like Super GALS!, not that I'm remotely suggesting that there's anything superior about liking "niche" titles (different tastes, not better tastes). That being said, I'd still love to be able to watch even just a quarter of what American anime fans take for granted on CN and Tech TV. |
