What in the world would possess anyone to name it Fooly-Cooly? This I do not understand. It doesn't even sound close to the original name, and on top of that, it looks utterly ridiculous! Would it kill them to just put Furi Kuri on the box? Now we'll have people running around calling it Fooly-Cooly - great! BAH! (End of rant)

Because in the Japanese language there is no definitive L or R...so they get swapped....it could be Furi Kuri or it could br Fuly Kuly (Fooly Kooly).

Much like there is debate in the Sailor Moon community whether it's supposed to be Serena or Selena....Serenity or Selenity....

They should have just kept witht he phonetic spelling, kinda like how in Hellsing they've kept it Arucard, not Alucard like you'd think.

That is pretty odd, you would think they would choose the other because it, well, doesn;t sound idiotic. Maybe they think americans will remember Fooly-Cooly easier because they are english words (well, kind of...), rather than making people remember Furi-Kuri. Of course it really is not hard to remember a name of a show, but that is the only answer I could think of... hehe, even if it is not a good one. Confused

IIRC, S-P said (at AX2k?) that the creative staff @ Gainax (specifically the director?) wanted it to be 'Fooly Cooly', not 'Furi Kuri'.

Actually, phonetically speaking, "Alucard" or "Arucard" would both be correct. As Cassandra said, there is no R sound or L sound in Japanese, so either are acceptable when romanizing the language.

In the case of Hellsing, Alucard would be considered most acceptable just because it would be consistant with the original intent (Alucard is Dracula backwards). I checked the site www.hellsing.net just out of curiosity, and it would appear that if you wanted to be completely faithful to the Japanese you would romanize his name as "Aakaado." Interesting...

In the case of Furi Kuri, Fuli Kuli (Fooly Cooly) would also be phonetically acceptable.

True, gainax wanted it to be Fooly Cooly. That doesnt mean it doesn't sound stupid. Shoulda just kept it the unpronouncable FLCL in my opinion.

Fooly Cooly's not much stupider than the English phrases on Japanese t-shirts. :) Go to www.engrish.com for worse phrases.

Is it just me, or is it actually used both ways on Pioneer's DVDs? The box summaries and subtitles clearly use "Arucard", but it seems to me that the dub pretty clearly pronounces it as "Alucard".

Perhaps the people responsible for the dubbed version did a little extra homework and realized the connection that Ramen has pointed out?

I would find that rather sad if true, especially since so many people automatically assume that subbed translations are more accurate than dubbed versions and many of them seem unreasonably excited about "correcting" dubbies because they get a different spelling...
Rolling Eyes

But that's a discussion for another thread. I won't weigh this thead down with my pet peeves like I seem to have done with the LA Times thread...

I think we can be pretty certain that "Serena" is the proper version of the former, since it wasn't used in the original Japanese and it was only used in the dub the one way...
8)

The other big R/L decisions that have had people's shorts in a knot lately are the names Cloverway used for two of the Amazoness Quartet girls: Para Para and Cele Cele. Despite the fact that Palla Palla and Cere Cere have been very common in thw fan community for many years, and the fact that they are clearly named for the asteroids Pallas and Ceres, AND the fact that the choice of romanization isn't consistant between the two... They somehow still managed to work those names into their final product. It's almost like they WANTED to Anglisize it improperly.

And then of course, there's our beloved "Besu Besu"...

Obviously, in contrast to Pioneer, Cloverway did NOT go out of their way to make their dub accurate and/or favorable to the hardcore fans.

Well, I know that, but it's not the issue at contention. Just because the L and R can be swapped, doesn't mean they should, just for the hell of it. Besides, if they can be interswapped, they should just keep them as Furi Kuri. I still wander why the creative staff at Gainax would want it Fooly Cooly, as all the Japansese PRs I had ever seen had it at Furi Kuri.

(And now that you mention it, I think it's absurd to have a debate over whether it's Serena or Selena. The name is Usagi. And if the Americans who made it Serena wanted it Serena, than that's what it is. There can be no possible debate about it. If the name in Japanese had been Serena, then there would've been grounds for debate. But as it is, it's like having, say, Rachmaninoff's name translated in America to Ralph, and people debating whether or not it's really Ralph or Ralf. It's just stupid.)

Yeah, I know Serena is only used in the dub. But it's a take-off of Queen Serenity's name. (Then why Serena becomes Neo Queen Serenity.) Selena is Greek for moon....so Selenity AND Selena would be from that. It makes much more sense if you think about it that way Wink

Right, but do you really think DiC thought that hard about it? Her Japanese name means rabbit. I think that if DiC had thought really hard about her name, and had been really clever about it, then they probably just chose Serena for convenience, because Serenity definitely makes more sense than Selenity. Besides, it would've been a waste to use wit with the intended audience.

But Gainax has done some great stuff.. they know what they are talking about. Remember "Goonbooster" or "Neon Genesis Evangerion".. and that movie "Death and Lebilth"... those were great. Lets not forget "Kaleshi Kanojo no Jijooo", or "His and hel cilcumstances". "Fooly Cooly" is a great product name; just like Otakoo no Video.

You can't just interchange l for r and oo for u for whatever the hell you damn well please and expect people to buy your justifications: "Nah yo, its cool. Its japanese."

However, I believe that Evangelion and the like already had the roman characters written as that. As compared to FLCL, which isn't even a word.....if the boxart and whatnot for FLCL said Furi Kuri, which it does not, that would be a different story.

It's not just Japanese... it's why the title was chosen originally:

FLCL is
FuLi CuLi is
Fooli Cooli is
Fooly Cooly

That's the evolution from FLCL to Fooly Cooly.

iow, that's how they planned it.
