Most Canadians are against opening up the domestic airwaves to first-time majority control by international investors, according to a public opinion poll released Thursday in Ottawa by the Friends of Canadian Broadcasting, which represents about 50,000 Canadian TV viewers. The survey of 1,100 Canadians conducted by pollster Ipsos-Reid found that two-thirds of Canadians have an "unfavorable" opinion of foreign ownership of Canadian telephone and cable companies. The survey also found that seven of 10 Canadians have a "negative view" of foreign ownership and control of Canadian media companies.

Guess you'll have to buy satellites to get your Cartoon Network fix.

Nope, it's illegal for Canadians to subscribe to American satellite TV services too.

But, really, polls are worth dick, and I really don't give a crap what the average Canadian thinks of foreign ownership of the media since I really do think that sort of macroeconomic decision is best left to the elite.

Werd.

Though keep in mind that this poll is concerned with foreign ownership ownership of Canadian stations; being against that is perfectly justified, and I'd even say that I am to a degree. The actual problem in Canada lies in the fact that legal access to foreign stations is completely blocked, which is flat-out media censorship.

Satelllite T.V is illegal in Canada. Fox News is banned. Not suprising they wouldn't want outside companys coming in. Good lord, can we say China? Thats what the Canadian governement is turning into. They want to make prostitution legal, and it is; in some parts. They also have legalized marijuana in some areas. As well as experimented with legalizing "harder" drugs. Talk about Tyranny. What the hell is wrong with that country.

And not to mention the fact there borders are much much easier to get across than even the U.S.. Especially legally, so all manner of terrorists come in there and sneak across. Lee Malvo the "DC Sniper". Came in from Canada. The French are esentially in charge of the country. The people in the West, are very similar to people from Minnesota. However the French in the East are extremly corrupt, and run the country.

Anime probably should be down just a little on the list. They have more pressing issues.

Someone should liberate Canada Holy Hell.

yes this subject really gets me angry! Evil or Very Mad

taloon43 well said we must be living in china

The funny thing is i read in the newspaper a few months ago that the major cable companies (shaw, rogers etc..) wanted to offer some american channels....these channels were CN, Nick , ESPN HBO and others. But guess who fought against it! TSN and sportsnet cried about how it is unfair competition to bring ESPN here so the gov't (CRTC) agreed with them. YTV and Teleton did the same about NICk and CN and of course the gov't agreed.....so its not just the CRTC its the broadcast companies that are also against us watching what we want to watch.

IMO Bell was the one that was truly against DTV and other Satelllite T.V companies being used in canada because they want to keep their monopoly. In fact they were the ones that made it american sats a problem in canada...instead of just fighting the gov't about "canadian content" and offering some REAL channels so we can watch something good.

Damn I used to watch CN and the real TECHTV (its funny how they will not allow TECHTV's anime shows in canada) all the time but since my DTV does not work right now Sad i can't. Plus after watching CN it really makes YTV look like crap.

people have tired to fight against it but Bell has deep pockets and are willing to protect their monopoly, plus the CRTC is backing them up Sad

Yet I know 5 people online who have some kind of illegal hookup. Not sure how that's achieved though. Is c-band legal in Canada?

Well, that quickly decomposed into a delirious, misinformed rant. You get the basic idea, but it wouldn't be entirely accurate to say that "the French in the East" are all to blame. Most government buraucracies can be traced back to Quebec (seeing as how "keeping the French in" is basically the whole basis upon which this country is built), but it passes through just about everything else, too.

Also, the apparent gradual legalization of prostitution and drugs (and last time I checked, neither one of those was completely legal in Canada), in my mind anyway, are on a completely different end of the spectrum from media censorship. In fact, I'd say that if societal inevitabilities like prostitution and marijuana were legalized (with restrictions of course), it would be a GOOD thing, making the government's logic behind media filtering look totally ironic.

I'm not saying that anime is a priority; it's just tangled up within a slew of other priorities.

And how are we like people from Minnesota?

This isn't the place for the blame game but with all do respect there Taloon43, they had to make it threw the U.S. Customs as well. So both partys show massive lacking in security just not one.

Well, some people pay for American satellite services through a false American address, others just have pirated cards. Either way, they risk getting a visit from the RCMP if they are discovered. Not worth the risk, and I doubt I could afford doing it the illegal but not immoral way (paying for it with the false address).

Are you an idiot?

First off, the deregulation of certain things, ie: Prostitution and Drugs, is the opposite or tyrany. So get it straight, censorship = tyrany, legalized prostitution / drugs = liberatarianism.

Secondly, prostitution is legal in at least one American state, if not more.

And finally, the Canadian government has never talked about legalizing harder drugs, only marijuana.

No, they are not. They wish they were, but the other 90% of Canada wouldn't allow it. (Quebec makes up for slightely under 20% of Canadian Population, and slightely over 50% of Quebec is trully francophone).

Quote:

Uhh, no. I've been to Western Canada, and I've been to Minesota, and I've also been to Eastern Canada and San Francisco. Montrealers are a hell of a lot more like people from San Francisco than people from the Prairies are like people from Minesota.

Hey, they elected their prime minister, can't say the same for the president of the United States. Nor have they ever had a leader of the country step down because of corruption related issues. Canadian leaders aren't exempt from scandal of course, I don't want to suggest that they are, but I don't think they are "extremely corrupt." I'd say they're pretty much par for the course when compared to the United States and the rest of the first world

Quote:

Someone should liberate Canada Holy Hell.
The United States tried that in 1812, Canada wasn't very happy to be 'liberated' and with the help of the Brittish they stomped on Washington.

But that was then, this is now. Canada is a democracy, a rather liberated democracy, if canadians want these things to change they will take the appropriate democratic steps. Just as you would petition your rep in the senate, Canadians will petition their rep in the house of commons. They also have the option of starting political parties for a particular cause since the Canadian political system is very open to multiple, diverse political parties.

I strongly suggest you learn to educate yourself on somehing before you open your mouth about it and make a fool out of yourself.

Your post almost deseves a ban.

Back to the topic on hand, our friend Pepperidge is probably the biggest advocate of getting anime onto Canadian Television but...

Quote:
Though keep in mind that this poll is concerned with foreign ownership ownership of Canadian stations; being against that is perfectly justified, and I'd even say that I am to a degree.

And even Pepperidge supports the CRTC rules and goals to some extent.

In order to protect certain aspects of "canadian culture" as well as canadian businesses, Canada has opted, with the support of its populace, to restrict the availability of foreign television in Canada.

The rules themselves don't directly impede our access to anime. For some stupid reason, the canadian TV channels that could show anime... don't. Or in the case of YTV, show very little.

Indirectly of course, the rules do keep good stations like Cartoon Network out, and they restricted Tech TV Canada from showing anything of a fictional nature (This was of course to some degree tech TV's own fault)

Personally, I don't give much of a damn since I just rent or buy the stuff, but I do understand how this must annoy the hell out of people that prefer not to buy, and don't have a local place that rents anime.
