It's not bad at all.
But you have to remember that limited release films often have very high per theatre earnings. Since only one or two theatres in an area are showing it, people flock to those two theatres... But of/when the film is expanded to a larger release, the numbers will definitely drop.

Well, if anything... maybe it will gain a lot of word of mouth support (although I know it did not work for Monoke) and it will grow just like My big Fat Greek Wedding (If I am not mistaken that movie started out as a limited release as well)
It's just a thought

yeah, good guess. i was a bit further off the mark, with my $350k estimate. (well, i got the 5 right. really!).
now it'll be interesting to see where it goes..
if word of mouth carries it (like MBFGW) then it'll expand, fairly rapidly no less.
if word of mouth doesn't kick in, it'll pull another Mononoke and peter out after a million or two, probably condemning most/all miyazaki movies to limited theatrical runs at best, and direct-to-video releases at worst.
tho admittedly, i don't think the outlook is too good for most of the other ones in theaters, since they're 'older' and they look it. in an age where cutting-edge animation is the most important thing, they'd be a hard sell to the masses.

I wonder how much the Cowboy Bebop movie will make in relation to Spirited Away. I'd guess more just because the TV series has been on TV for quite a while.

Yes, sometime in 2003. But they aren't firm on the details yet.

The Bebop movie is edited cus the songs are in English which means Sony forced Yoko Kanno to make the movie appeal to an American audience! Oh, and the movie's less violent than the tv show, which means Watanabe sold out to have anime mainstream! (Just pulling a Byron folks. :) ) Oh yeah, and Spirited Away may be PG, but Disney got Tarantino to write the script and he snuck in some curse words that didn't belong.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was PG-13. Too bad it sold out so fast...
