I'm really surprised episode 4 fast forwarded trough 8 year in a couple of minutes, seems like a lot of good material was left behind. It also raise the question of what Fatima has been doing for all those year? Like, are they really still going over element, or have they moved on to other book? I'm guessing they wanted to keep to the historical calendar, so they kinda decided that 8 year wasn't a big deal and could be just swept away, but would have been good to dedicate at least an episode to kinda track how Fatima changed over that period. Its hard to estimate people age, but she probably went from a teenager to a young adult during that time, on top of changing culture completely. Is she really just the same person after all that?

When Lynzee suggested looking at the history — whoo, boy, spoilers!
Suffice it to say that Sorghaghtani, Töregene, and… even someone named Fatima … are major world-historical figures. (The time-skip in the anime mirrors the time-skip in the manga. The story has only begun. I don’t think they’re going to cover the history in one 12 episode anime, even with time-skips, but, like Lynzee, I’ve only read the first two of the (currently six) volume manga. That said, so far they’re pretty much covering each volume of manga in two episodes.) |

Really the timeskip makes sense if you look at the childhood section as establishing Sitara (now Fatima) as a protagonist shaped by unexpected love followed by unfathomable loss and trauma in her childhood which will, I believe, define her future now that she's nearly an adult and will begin to step into her own. Important context for the broader narrative but the actual "growth" of her as a slave to the Mongol empire likely doesn't have too much, she's basically been the servant of the wife to the presumed Kha'an... up until Ogedai was elevated above Tolui which will presumably serve as the inciting incident of the core plot.
This is just speculation based on my knowledge of the historical figures, I haven't read this manga although I aim to rectify that soon. |

Its more that its a shame they skip that much, it was fertile ground for interesting stories, its odd to just throw it away without doing anything with it, and leaves Fatima poorer as a character since it implies she experienced essentially 0 growth of her world view during that time.

Even at only 4 episodes in, this is definitely one of the best, well-thought anime I've watched. The premise is already so fascinating and it's also enhanced by beautiful visuals. What I like most about it is the portrayal of the conflicted feelings towards the victim-oppressor dynamic through Sitara/Fatima's perspective . Through her inner thoughts I am constantly reminded about the grief and strife she experiences even when the storybook-like design minimizes the graphic gore and violence shown and some scenes are skipped. That's why the story tension I feel lies on following if her rage will waver or dissipate (in her past she did feel she had benevolent masters, will that happen again now?). The actual historical events have become secondary to me, and I will refrain from researching further until the end. We all know at present the empire collapsed, but how Fatima factors into it, I welcome Science Saru to narrate it for me in their amazing stylization

So far this season has made me read through several books, essays and research papers
 Most are for Jaadugar, and the rest for World is Dancing and The Elusive Samurai. Suffice to say I have very much spoiled myself of the entire plot of these stories... but I have no regrets! All that is left is to see them unfold in magnificent detail and perhaps be surprised by some twists.
What I really find interesting is that we are being baited by "cameos" of major historical figures. They even threw in Kublai and Hulegu in the latest episode  . But for me it's telling that we don't even get to see the face of Genghis Khan himself, and minor details like the absence of Jochi (the first prince who is also very likely an illegitimate son) during Ogedei's coronation not being explained nor acknowledged tells me this story will not just be about Sitara witnessing history unfold (contrary to Biwa's role in The Heike Story, the other Naoko Yamada x Science Saru history collab).
There's so much room for creativity here because books tend to omit women's roles in history. Just the other day I read some comment that insinuated this is just a Mongolian history version of 'girlbossing'  , but I'll gladly have it.

iirc there's no reliable description or portrait of Genghis Khan, so we don't really know what he looked like. |

Which is why I'll always picture him as J. Carn from the World Heroes games. |
