1. Alright, gotta admit--I was lol'ing through the entire Atlantica ad. Just totally caught me off guard. xD.

2. Have a good birthday, Justin. Those words won't mean much, though, since you apparently had a shitty week altogether, but who needs details?

3. I've learned to just filter out whatever bullshit justifications I see/hear for things like scantalations sites, tbh.

4. Damn. I've never had the chance to go to an AX, and if things stay on the track that they're apparently on from what was discussed in this cast, I may never get the chance. >.> And that Fruity Pebbles commercial was fuckin' genius. Cool

Listening to the rest now.

Erm...entire AX staff quit? No, not quite...

And the ticketing policy has been around since 2007 or something. Pay for the better seats, and the rest are distributed to the stand-by line. I think this was around for the Masquerade last year as well. Didn't really go to any ticketed events in the two years I went before, so I don't know what went on at Anaheim Main Events...

The only major change I saw was that there are no more hotel main event vouchers for anyone staying in the AX Hotel Block.

Speaking on the topic of old shows being brought back I saw the Yu Yu Hakusho\Ninku "movie" yesterday and while I didn't think much of the Yu Yu Hakusho Movie I really liked the Ninku movie. After I watched it I was thinking "WHY ISN'T THE REST OF NINKU LICENSED?!?" If you could get the license for that I would go crazy and scream with excitement. I've also been wanting to see Kochikame after finding out about it from Jump Ultimate Stars and would be very happy if you got that show too.

In all seriousness, anyone who's at all into MMORPGs seriously needs to check out Atlantica - picking up (and then dropping) free games I see banner ads for around the internet is something of a hobby of mine, and Atlantica Online is by far the best one I've yet found; I've stuck with it for more than a year now. The story is totally immersive, the combat system is varied enough to hold the attention, and the environments are so gorgeously rendered that you'd swear you were actually paying for it.

...just saying. Now to listen to the rest of the podcast!

Well my family (mother's side) runs conventions (for profit though) and it's always, grow every year, so a slowing down would be bad as you need to have something different every time and grow every time so that you can get repeat con-goers.

The last thing we need is more godawful anime adaptations from Hollywood. I shudder when I remember that they're working on a Cowboy Bebop movie. I wish that Japanese studios could just be given a Hollywood budget for these type of movies, and only have slight American involvement.

However, some things, I find, are just better off staying in ink or animation, working better there.

That said, I enjoyed Speed Racer. Speed Racer was screwed over by critics. Critics warned people not to see it, because they didn't get it. Speed Racer was a live-action cartoon, colorful and cheesy, and fun, and they probably just dismissed it outright because it wasn't some gripping drama. It's Speed Racer. It was at least as good as the show.

As for OEL "manga", it's too bad passion doesn't equal talent. If that were the case, I would be pretty talented myself.

Alright, just finished. It was good one--enjoyed it.

What really got my attention during the interview was this talk of Barefoot Gen. I feel as though I've heard of it before, but I've never seen it. Just from what was said in the cast about it, I've become seriously interested in it--just from the fact that Northrop seemed to be getting pretty emotional as he spoke about it, I can tell that it's a seriously dramatic story of a seriously dramatic point in time. I'm prone to liking those sorts of things though(despite how much emotional torture the tragedy of it all may put me through) and I've always been captivated by stories of struggling in Japan during WWII(for example, I loved Grave of the Fireflies).

Anyway, I'll definitely be giving that a look into whenever I get the chance.

P.S. "Aw, shit--sorry guys, I almost forgot: Heat Guy J." LOLZ. I seriously should've seen that one comin', though. xD.

Funny thing about the 1000 episodes with GE999 and Harlock alone taking up over 15% of the total. Yeah, World Masterpiece Theater titles might not get many followers, but these old Leiji titles don't fare incredibly better.

Concerning the scanlation issue, I have but two responses

1. I'm way, way too ahead in terms of English Naruto manga releases. If Viz were to do the same thing that they're doing with the anime (offering recent releases on their site), I would drop scanlation sites in a heart beat.

2. I'm sure this gets mentioned often in these issues, but what of scanlations of decade old manga (say Go Nagai's Getter Robo) and Seinen releases (ex. Kengo Hanazawa's Ressentiment) that have practically no chance of being licensed here? What would you have us, who have no other way of getting translations of these particular kinds of works, do? Twiddle our thumbs and keep our eyes closed till a license magically appears? Rolling Eyes

This issue pisses me off to no end because the people involved refuse to see both sides of it...

I think the issue isn't really so much with the titles that aren't licensed and probably never will be since there isn't really any harm done. The problem, at least in terms of what was talked about in the podcast, is that many aggregater sites have stuff that is readily available for purchase, either by just scanning the licensed copies or putting up scanlations after the fan groups pulled them, and also charging for it.

If it was just old/unlicensed titles, nobody would really care too much. However, it isn't just those titles, and it seems pretty difficult to claim that something is a fansite when it profits without giving back to the industry.

That "disclaimer voice" was effing creepy. Laughing

jsevakis: "There's been nothing in theaters...I wanted to see at least."

What about that Paprika remake, er, Inception? Rolling Eyes

"My only con this year."

You still have PMX.

"Very few got off the ground."

Well, to be fair, as Davis points out, a lot of movies don't immediately get made. X-Men and Spider-man were actually stuck for years in development hell.

"Nobody is immediately derisive about you being into anime here."

Should've been here 15 years ago.

"[Gen anime] is the hardest thing to watch."

Try the manga. I'm surprised Last Gasp made it to volume 10 here with how morbid it gets. BTW, a Geneon rep told me that the movies were licenses they actually didn't acquire for monetary reasons, but for the importance of the work.

"Your Japanese friend has never met an American film-goer. That is not how we operate."

Actually, it's not that far off. For example, it really pissed me off when people in junior high were talking about Schindler's List in the same style as Jurassic Park. [I.E. a tentpole which was all thrills and chills.] They might have meant something completely different, but the discussions had the same tone, and I definitely felt it cheapened the idea of the film. So, yeah, I could totally see a Gen movie pandering to that contingent.

Zac: "This isn't going to work."

It probably won't work with hentai if it hasn't with regular porn, at least.

"$20 for each concert"

I guess they want the artists to see experience even fewer American fans than usual. Razz

"I hate for it to turn into some shitty, greedy, corporate America-type thing."

Then you'll have to GTFO of L.A. in general, 'cus I don't know any place left here which is about fun, rather than profit. For example, compare Melrose when the first AX was here, and now.

"whole bunch of bullshit about [Battle Angel movie]"

What? Was Jimmy worried that Davis would crack some Titanic/Avatar jokes?

"terrible commercial from the 90s"

Hey, Barney owns! You gonna start hatin' on any HB characters, make it Snaggle Puss!

"Has that damaged the potential for anime properties to get picked up?"

If Barb Wire, Judge Dredd, and Tank Girl bombing didn't stop comic book movies from getting made...

"The [Speed Racer] film is a successful adaptation."

Not if you like speed and racing.

Davis: "Why wasn't it a hit? It wasn't marketed right."

Well, that, and the thing should've been about 90 minutes, not two hours.

"There's a debate about [Dragonball Evolution]."

Um, what's there to debate? It looked worse than a fookin' fan video on Youtube.

"I think shojo has come of age in terms of Hollywood beginning to look at it."

It sounds to me like H'Wood is already on the ball with shojo concepts, at least.

"But prove this is going to work for what we do. They're very smart about that."

They didn't seem to be when it came to DB: E. Rolling Eyes

"tall order that involves an all-Japanese cast."

Especially when they couldn't seem to find Japanese actors to play Japanese characters for 'Geisha, since they don't exist. Rolling Eyes

"a fantastic anti-war piece"

Well, given that American anti-war movies are doing horribly at the box office, doesn't Gen face even more obstacles? I mean, unless the inevitable remake of Johnny Got His Gun becomes a hit, of course.

"We're trying to get it to Spielberg."

Hellz no! Give it to David Fincher or Danny Boyle, dammit. They'd "get" it better.

"They say it was one of their biggest sellers, and it amazed me."

Well, the manga's been around in comic stores forever, so it's practically part of that culture at this point.

Same Justin. I'm in the big 3-0 club, too. It seems like ages ago when I was talkin' to fans in their 40s.

Well, I just tweeted my dream Hollywood Bebop cast to Bandai, so I hope someone can make it happen.

No, it wasn't, because the show didn't have boring conversations.

THIS. IS. ATLANTICAAAA!!!

I just picture Zac and Justine sitting at the computer, decked out in Atlantica baseball caps and Atlantica windbreakers, drinking from Atlantica coffee cups, lighting their Atlantica-brand cigarettes with Altantica Zippos. . . .

I just hope NDOORS doesn't find out that Geneon was able to get a year's worth of Heat Guy J plugs without spending a dime.

However, when looking at the big manga viewing sites, they are doing so much that is so wrong, are intentionally designed to support ripping off artists, and intentionally designed to con newbies into thinking they are legit, so when defenders of the big manga viewing sites use all the old "scanlations of unlicensed works" argument, its just rank, stinking hypocrisy or self-delusion.

On the issue of small niches, old classics, and genres that will not sell overseas as they do in Japan, Erica Friedman at Okazu has a piece on "the solution to the Scanlation Solution". She argues, basically, that Scanlations did indeed solve a real problem, but are now in total contributing to doing damage to the industry, and proposes a start on a solution, gleaned from suggestions of many people she has been talking with about this problem.

Hey, it's what I do. And buy other stuff while you wait to read to increase the likelihood of a company licensing them. Buy similar stuff like DH's entire, seinen-oriented manga line for example. If companies have more $$$, they have more free time to experiment.

Wow, Zac and Justin sure call the forums on the crap justifications for scanlations.
