Can Violinist of Hameln get some more recognition? That show was so stunningly gripping when I first watched it. Now all I see is the waaaay underfunded animation, but it really was a pretty awesome script.

Hey, that El Hazard description is all cockeyed(fun word). Makoto didn't get the ancient tech power(he was just a smartypants) and Nanami didn't have the power to dispell illusions(she had the mighty power of....Business Sense!....and soy sauce) in The Wanderers TV series. That was all in the earlier El Hazard: The Magnificent World OVAs. I are fanboy! Hear roar me! rawrs.

Here is MY question......Where is Rune Soldiers gang in this? TBH this list needs more space but as an avid Escaflowne fan gotta say they'd fit in better for the stereotype team then they do...

Another one that could be considered here is Ruin Explorers. Its party at the end had two warriors (Lyle and Migel), one pure wizard (Rasha), a shaman (Fam), a multiclassed warrior/wizard (Ihrie), and a thief (at least that's why I'd call Galuff).
And another option would be Tears to Tiara, which at one point has barbarians, warriors, a ranger, a bard, and assorted different types of magic users from four different races (human, elf, and two that are spoilers), including assorted subraces. |

Rune Soldiers is done by the same guy as Lodoss War. For me, I felt I had to do one or the other. |

Not to mention Lodoss War, Rune Soldiers and Legend of Crystania all took place in the same world. Having all of them take up three of seven available spots would kind of be overkill.

Could someone educate me about the difference between a paladin, a warrior, and a ranger as it pertains to their function within a party? It seems to me like they all are just there to provide the non-magical muscle, even if they're coming at it from different motivations.
I'm asking because I don't know, and because I'm not sure of the criteria for the list. The blurb says you need a warrior, mage, healer, and a paladin, while the article starts off with a ranger, a paladin, an acrobat, a magician, a thief, a barbarian, and a Unico knockoff unicorn. So who exactly is needed to make up a "traditional fantasy party"? 
I was thinking about Moribito, with Balsa as the warrior/paladin/ranger (unless they're more different than I can see), Torogai as the mage/shaman, Tanda as the healer, and maybe Touya as the thief/trader (even though he's not always with them), but maybe that's not enough people to qualify. |

I'd have chosen The Weathering Continent: you got the bruiser with Guts' voice, a lithe thief-type girl but closer to normal warrior, and a magician priest. Covers all the basic types of party members. The film is even a nice little complete conquest, shame that more was never animated from the novels.

A warrior is just your straight up physical-attacking swordsman, but a paladin is a holy warrior. Depicted differently, depending on the game, but usually appears to be a warrior, but has healing attributes. Many cases is pictured as a crusader, making sense, however Final Fantasy confuses me... In IV you have Cecil, who is a paladin, and wears the typical white armor and such, but of course most characters can use some form of magic in the game. But... in Tactics Advance, a paladin wears what appears to be middle eastern garb, and usually wields scimitars, but the white magic is the main focus of them. *shrugs* Rangers... Well, usually they are seen as a sort of stealth class, focusing on remaining hidden. I mean, in many games 'hunters' and 'rangers' are pretty much the same thing, and pretty much always carry bows. Makes sense though! More of a protector of the woods/nature/whatever, and can attack from afar in the middle of the woods, unseen. Carry daggers too, usually, but not often swords. And yet, not quite as stealthy as rogues, since rangers are usually ranged... So yeah, if that all makes sense, there is definitely a difference :p |

Sword and Sorcery epics were so big in the nineties. This list made me nostalgic. I watched so many of these shows as a teenager.
Slayers will always be the best of the lot in my opinion! |

@Sheleigha: That's kind of what I meant by them having different motivations for being there. But it still sounds like their role in the party is essentially to provide the muscle. Or, to put a finer point on it, if you have a paladin, you don't need a healer too, and if you have a ranger, you don't need a thief. So if you just had a paladin, and ranger and a mage, you'd be set. But somehow that doesn't seem right.
Anyway, thanks for the elaboration, but I still don't know what player types constitute a traditional fantasy party. |
