Hmm, I guess that puts some perspective on how big of a market we are compared to the mainstream.

Pretty much what I expected.
I find one fallacy a lot of anime fans seem to fall into is that they see the large anime sections in mainstream video stores, like how, at Metro Video in Montreal, the anime section is more or less the same size as the comedy section or the action section, and they assume that means there's as big an audience for the stuff as there is for live-action comedies or action films, when I've always just assumed that all that means is that we're a big-spending niche for DVDs compared to your average non-anime fan consumer. Yes, anime fandom has grown considerably compared to what it was 6 or 7 years ago, but it's still a niche market, make no mistake about it. |

Actually, I believe last year it was also something like 1 or 2%. So it doesn't suprise me to the size of the anime home video market as small as 1.4% (although I believe it'd be higher than 1.4% if it wasn't because of bootlegs).
Anime might seem like a large market, but I think it only seems that way because the fans tend to be more vocal and hardcore. Also, the majority of buyers tend to be older (or at least buyers with a steady source of income). So a lot of younger anime fans, unless their parents are loaded or their babysitting job is paying them more than usual, simply don't have the income to purchase a lot of anime titles. |

i wonder if the neilson scan ratings are in any way skewed against anime as they do not total 100% of all video sales
Without knowing the figures, I imagine anime get a large boost with the advent of dvd. i could see some stronger growth in the future, especially if clubs (like columbiahouse) continue to place a larger emphasis on anime in their catalogs. |

Actually, with statistics, there is such a thing as a sample size that is too large. There's some method to determine the ideal sample size, but I don't remember it. It's been three years since I took statistics. |

WalMart will not allow their numbers to be tracked, and probably never will.
Nothing is skewed, it's just that the industry is far smaller than most people would like to imagine it to be. It's the same with the fantasy that "everyone in Japan watches tons of anime" and "fansubs are perfectly legal because I don't live in Japan" |
