Ruby Rose is patterned after Little Red Riding Hood.

Weiss Schnee is patterned after Snow White. Her name is German for "White Snow".

Blake Belladonna is patterned after Belle of Beauty and the Beast. Her name is also taken from the hallucinogenic plant Atropa Belladonna.

Yang Xiao Long is patterned after Goldilocks. Her name, Yang (陽), is Chinese for "light".

Jaune Arc is named after Joan of Arc.

Nora Valkyrie is named after Nora Barlow (the granddaughter of Charles Darwin) and the female warriors of Norse mythology.

Pyrrha Nikos is named after the Greek mythological figure Pyrrha and the goddess Nike.

Lie Ren's name (猎人) is Chinese for "Huntsman". The character is patterned after Hua Mulan.

Professor Ozpin is named after the titular character from The Wizard of Oz. Glynda Goodwitch is named after Glinda the Good Witch, also from the same book.

Roman Torchwick is named after Candlewick from Pinocchio. His outfit is inspired by that of Alex from A Clockwork Orange.

Cinder Fall is named after Cinderella.

Penny is patterned after Pinocchio.

Zwei is German for the number two. As such, he is a nod to Cowboy Bebop's Ein, another Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

Cardin Winchester is named after Henry Beaufort, Cardinal of Winchester, who presided over the trial of Joan of Arc.

Velvet Scarlatina is named after The Velveteen Rabbit.

Sun Wukong is patterned after the character of the same name in Journey to the West.

Dr. Bartholomew Oobleck is named after the children's book Bartholomew and the Oobleck.

The Grimm are named after the Brothers Grimm, best known for writing numerous fairy tales. Each Grimm has a unique name reference. The wolf-like Grimm is the Beowulf, named after the Old English poem of the same name. The bear-like Grim is the Ursa, which is Latin for "bear". King Taijitu is a snake-like Grimm and is named after the Yin/Yang symbol. Death Stalker is named after the breed of scorpion. Nevermore is a raven-like Grimm that references Edgar Allan Poe's poem The Raven. Boarbarusk is a boar-like Grimm whose name is derived from the Latin word "barbatus", meaning "bearded".

Volumes 1-3 were animated using Smith Micro Poser Pro. Rooster Teeth switched to Autodesk Maya from Volume 4 onwards.

Yuri Lowenthal took over the role of Mercury Black in Volume 3 after J. J. Castillo left Rooster Teeth.

Oscar Pine is reportedly named after the real name of the Wizard from The Wizard of Oz

Sage Ayana's outfit is patterned after Taeyang of the K-Pop group Big Bang.

Neptune Vasilias' appearance and outfit are patterned after T.O.P of the K-Pop group Big Bang.

Neon Katt is named after the Nyan Cat meme.

Summer Rose is named after the Thomas Moore poem "The Last Rose of Summer."

General James Ironwood is based on the Tin Woodman from The Wizard of Oz.

Jacques Schnee's name alludes to Jack Frost.

Klein Seiben, the Schnee family butler, is German for "small seven" - an allusion to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Ghira Belladonna is named after Bagheera from The Jungle Book.

Kali Belladonna is named after the Hindu goddess Kali.

Salem is named after the Massachusetts town known for its witch trials from 1692 to 1693.

Tyrian Callows is named after a shade of purple called tyrian.

Emerald Sustral alludes to Aladdin.

Sienna Khan is named after Shere Khan of The Jungle Book.

Spot the Shameless Plug: In episode 18, Jaune is seen reading a comic book of X-Ray and Vav, which is another Rooster Teeth Animation title.
