Trivia:

The Haibane Renmei logo with the sun and 'CFF', stands for 'Charcoal Feather Federation'. This is from the doujinshi (and origin of the anime) by Yoshitoshi ABe.

For the original doujinshi that started Haibane Renmei there were six books in all. The first four were released under the title: The Haibane of Old Home, and the other two released under the title: The Haibane Life Diary. These six were released before the anime's debut in Japan. A seventh was released after the anime, titled simply: Extra Chapter.

The text immediately underneath the 'Halo With Wings' symbol in the Haibane Renmei title graphic reads 'une fille qui a des ailes grises', translated from the French: 'a girl who has grey wings'.

The concept of Haibane-Renmei has several parallels in the literary work of Haruki Murakami (of whom series creator Yoshitobi ABe is an admitted admirer) most notably 'Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World', but also 'The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle'.
