Trivia:

In the scene where Hikaru blasts his way through Bodolza's ship, a missile painted to look like a Budweiser can appears on one frame of the animation. Another missile is labeled Tako Hai (an alcoholic beverage which literally translates as "Octopus Highball").

The English dub released by Best Video was produced in Japan, using Japanese voice actors and targeted at the Japanese market.

In the Macross documentary featured on Macross Plus in Japan, the movie is considered a "summary" of the events which transpired in Macross.

The 1998 videogame adaptation of this film for the Sony PlayStation features an all-new introduction and additional footage exclusive to the game. Akira Kamiya, Mika Doi and Sho Hayami reprised their roles as Roy Focker, Misa Hayase and Maximillian Jenius, respectively. Because Arihiro Hase died two years earlier, the new footage used prerecorded tracks of his role as Hikaru Ichijo from the movie.

A concert scene was planned and designed but was never animated for the original film's closing credits.

According to Anime Bargain Bin Reviews, Carl Macek originally wanted "Robotech: The Movie" (alias "Robotech: The Untold Story") to be edited from this Anime movie, but for some reason, it was instead an edited version of "Megazone 23".

A concert scene was planned and designed but was never animated for the film's original closing credits. This sequence was eventually animated in the 1987 OAV The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Flash Back 2012.

252 theaters screened 'Macross: DYRL' nationwide for 857,582 theatergoers during its initial 1984 Japanese theatrical run. With 1,100-yen pre-sale tickets and higher at-door prices, the creators easily recouped the 200,020,000-yen production costs several times over. The production cost total was only about $1 million in US dollars in 1984, but several times higher now due to inflation and the yen's rise.
