Trivia:

The cats that Takaki and Akari talk about in the Cherry Blossom Chapter, Chobi and Mimi, bear the same names as the cats in She and Her Cat--another of Shinkai's short films.

The mouse Takaki uses in part 3 is based off the Logitech MX Revolution

In part 3 in a window you can see a box labeled "Windows VASTA", obviously referencing to Windows Vista.

In part three, the trains pass each other for five seconds. You can see this by looking at the train crossing arrows on the top left hand side.

In the beginning of Part 3, three magnets can be seen on a bulletin board, one of which is the Catbus from My Neighbor Totoro. The two others bear resemblences to Jiji from Kiki's Delivery Service and Totoro himself.

In Part 2, the animation of the paper plane is almost identical to the paper plane in the opening movie for 'Ef - The First Tale', which Makoto Shinkai also helped to animate.

The title “5 Centimeters Per Second” comes from the speed at which cherry blossoms petals fall, petals being a metaphorical representation of humans, reminiscent of the slowness of life and how people often start together but slowly drift into their separate ways.

In 2009, a Chinese animation company Liuzhou Lan Hai technologies Ltd. admitted to plagiarizing several backgrounds from the film to use in their own animation series.

Four months to the day after the DVD release in America, ADV Films announced they were discontinuing release of the film.
